Thanks but I don't want to create 3d text! I've been creating all kinds of 3D text for the last 10 years. Ignore the 3d text part, the image was just an example.

I want to make the clean contour lines of the image more 'sketchy' a 2d program.

Have you tried the Cutout filter in the Artistic filer group? That should help roughing up the lines a bit if that is what you mean by "sketchy". Combining in some Paint Daubs filter might also help.

Activation seems to me to be Adobe attempting to protect their investment, and who can blame them. I have come in contact with many people still using V6 because later versions "require activation"...or in other words, it is somewhat more difficult to steal. The only people who seem to be really angry about activation are those who can't steal the software anymore, or those who have the occasional problem of running out of licenses/installation tries. I've had issues because of hardware upgrades, and it was incredibly easy to solve with a simple phone call to Adobe.

In the end, if users are going to 'go to GIMP', they were going to steal the software anyway. Adobe is not losing law-abiding citizens by requiring activation. Frankly, I find registering my software and activating to be a breeze, and a benefit. Adobe tracks all my SNs for me, and when I need to reinstall, I just check them out and copy/paste into the SN field...saves more time than arguing about how authentication is 'bad'.

If you need the software, buy it. If you can't afford it, Elements does more than most people think when it comes to image editing, at abut 1/10th the price.

I would try shadow/highlight on a dupe layer first to bring up the contrast
in the tree areas, they are quite muddy
cropping like that makes it very grainy and not as interesting composition
it looks like a B&W shot till I see color in the people
have you alreday desaturated it?
maybe consider adding some more color into it or removing it altogether

Bob: Please pardon me for appearing contrary. As I understand it, the relative vulnerability of a RAID 0 array v. individual drives is a well-established fact.

<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raid_0#RAID_0_failure_rate>

I appreciate that your personal experience may compellingly conflict with this idea.

(An important footnote: A RAID 0 of SSDs has a different Mean Time Between Failure calculation than a RAID 0 of spinning disks. Spinning disks degrade continuously during power-on time, while the disks spin, but SSDs degrade with use. So since a RAID 0 array divides use across drives it actually _improves_ the longevity of groups of SSDs. Anyway, _that_ is a theory.)

Lawrence: The SSD certainly did what? I think maybe you're saying that the Photoshop operation you performed certainly made use of scratch. Did you verify this by some means, such as watching the scratch file grow?

For general performance, some SSDs have been measured to do very well. See the results in this article:

<http://techreport.com/articles.x/15931/2>

The Intel X25-E SSD leads a pack of 7200 and 10K RPM drives.

The question remains of whether Photoshop's scratch access profile aggravates specific shortcomings of SSDs (small chunk problems). And whether there's anything that can be done about that.

As for endurance, "million cycle flash" has been around for almost a decade and is now commonplace. This means, as far as rewrite cycles, modern SSDs have a continuous-use lifetime of half a century.

<http://www.storagesearch.com/ssdmyths-endurance.html>

(Though there is some question about degraded performance over time, caused by shuffling around blocks and there's some talk about "refreshing" drives using a kind of low-level erase.

<http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=669>

)

You're discussing statistics and I'm discussing real life.
Statistically, you have a 500% better chance of winning the lottery by
buying 5 tickets instead of 1.

In reality,the chances are so slim that 1 ticket has just as much a
chance as 5.

Same for RAID(0). Again...what's the difference if you have one drive
with data on it crash on you or one drive in a RAID crash?

The answer is zero and the benefits of RAID(0) with large files is well
worth it.

The scratch disk dis grow.

As I said, the expectation of better performance is there, and is valid.
I ran my tests late last year. Probably outdated/ But still, even $400 is too much for a scratch disk, imo.

The low level erase is using the same technology as re-write cd's. That holds the greatest promise, because (MLC) flash has to erase to 0's before re-writing, which means that the data has to be copied then written back.

So far as statistics, well, one event doesn't make or break the numbers.

You mean your real life, right Bob?

I had a choice of Standard or Clear Type and just now chose Clear Type. Begging to report, as my dear friend Corporal Schweik would say, No Change. I can hardly make out this type as I write. Quel disastre. The operation was a success, only the patient died.

I think there is a problem with the 182.08 driver. I got a reply from Nvidia support when I reported my cursor fixed but new OpenGL problems and the response was:

"Sorry to hear about the new problem with the updated driver. It looks like our engineers inadvertently broke something in the process as they were fixing a related issues. There is a newer beta driver posted at a 3rd party site that you may want to try. I suspect this driver was leaked to them awhile back from an unknown source.

<http://downloads.guru3d.com/GeForce-ForceWare-185.20-XP-32-bit-download-2154.html>

If this driver produce the same behavior, we may have to waiting a bit for the next driver update"

I chose not to try out the untested 185.20 driver (instead I've gone back to v182.06 with the cursor probs) as I looked at a user forum on it (which is linked to on the above download page) and others (tho not all) were experiencing some problems with it (game related, but 3D probs).

I personally will wait instead till Nvidia officially release it in the hopes that it will be better. But someone else may care to give it a go.

Hello, I originally installed the software on my second drive which is intalled in my computer casing. This is due to limited space I have on my "C" drive, this is where the file "MyPictures" are also found.
Through Bridge, I can go through the "mypictures" file without a problem, however, if I am in photoshop the minute I go through the "open" fil commande the window opens I see the files but the computer freezes and I have to shut down the program.

I have received many suggestions to which none have resolved the problem. I have moved stuff around and I am now able to fit on the "C" drive the program (Photoshop) and "MyPictures" onto it. It did not solve the program either.
Is there anyone out there who can help me?

Thank you

Guy

Yes, as a matter of fact before reinstalling the program on the "C" drive I did a defrag to make sure the disk was in order before reinstallation.

I am new to CS3, but I'm not a total greenie in photo editing after working with Jasc & Corel over the past few years. This one is starting to make me feel stupid. Maybe I'm having a brain cramp. I see the Background Eraser Tool, but after searching high and low, I can't find the Eraser Tool. Where is the little bugger hiding???

Click and hold (or ALT+Click) on ALL the icons in the Toolbox that show a little tiny triangle on their buttons. LOTs of grouped (some call them "hidden". I don't...) tools.

Anywhere you see just about ANY little icon, button, arrow or tiny triangle, try clicking and/or ALT+Clicking on them to see what secrets they hold.

Also, have a look at EVERY Menu item, and give them a try. Just don't "Save" and close your image and you will always be able to go back to your original unedited state by clicking the image at the very top of your History Palette.

Don't forget to give the Help files a thorough scan while you're exploring, too.

Informal observation of disc access operations comparing Vista64 vs XP32 on
the same machine: nearly equal. I was quite surprised. Of course this is a
quad core uber machine with more ram than the 32 bit OS can access and may
be particular to this configuration.
Vista 32: time by your wall clock minute hand slower--only a slight
exaggeration.
Slooooowwww disc access has been, for me, the most disappointing aspect of
Vista 32 compared to XP--an utter waste of the horsepower in a modern
computer.
Win7: unusable due to instability and driver issues (this seems unusual for
a new Microsoft OS, no?): unfortunately no exaggeration. If Microsoft is
foisting a new driver model on peripheral vendors, as they did with Vista,
Win7/Vista SP3 will be another Microsoft clusterf**k.
Conclusion: it is worth running Vista 64 instead of XP32, as opposed to
Vista 32 for which the change from XP is not a rational choice, if you have
the right hardware and programs that can benefit from the extra RAM. The
right program is 32 bit Photoshop for which you will get, without having to
resort to command line switches, an extra GB of RAM in which the program can
run compared to a 32 bit OS.
The benefits of Photoshop CS4 64, which has total access to all that RAM,
are more difficult to quantify. I see no significant time differences,
meaning what a user notes in real time, performing the same operations on
the same images in CS4 32 or 64. Few Photoshop users will ever process
images that will run up against the RAM limits in a 32 bit OS, no matter
what they imagine, and the most common 32 bit Plug-ins do not run on CS4-64.
