Presuming you have a modern DDR motherboard with four RAM slots doubling the
memory to 4 gbs will allow more memory to Photoshop but really only 3 gbs
will be seen by the OS.
There is a command line switch that makes more memory available for programs
that is usually reserved for the OS but it makes little practical difference
to everyday use.
Going to 4gbs of RAM is a reasonable option.
In truth the speed at which Photoshop runs is primarily dependent on
Processor speed. Two or 4 cores are better than one, not because of
multithreading, which is limited in Photoshop, but because the OS can
offload background processes to other cores.
Most benchmarks I have seen do not show great practical differences running
Photoshop on a 64 bit OS, which allows for more RAM. The most likely reason
is that single threaded processes still have to shovel all their data
through one processing core regardless of how much physical ram is
available.

No - I've got a pretty critical eye and pretty high standards.

But now I think I've found the root of my problem. I went to another
computer and viewed some of my posts and they're fine. The noise in the
hummingbird picture was just that - noise - nothing more, and only because I
shot at a high ISO speed. What really alarmed me was something I was seeing
on other pictures where there was a flat surface in varying shades of light
(like that door on that old Packard). Instead of a smooth transition from
light to dark it was "stepping" in lines about every 1/8 or an inch. Very
distracting. Also showed up as concentric circles in some scenes.

I see no evidence of that on the other monitor so I'll conclude there's
something going wrong with the one I use. I hate to spend the money on a
new one but at least I think I can rule out some kind of PhotoShop
malfunction.

In that case, check if your display settings have changed from 32bit to
16bit.

I loaded CS4 about a week ago, and immediately went to nVidia and NIK for any upgrades or patches and loaded them.

My NIK (at least Sharpener 3.0) filters are working in the 32 bit version. (NIK has not yet entered the 64 bit world).

Clone stamp is not working today - CS4 is messaging a program error. Help. I really do not want to part with my cordless Logitech keyboard and mouse - but if it is the problem....

Also - what is a reasonable RAM to get good effect from CS4 64 bit running on Vista Ultimate 64 bit - I have 4 gigs and know that this is not enough.

Has anyone used NIK filters successfully in CS4?

I've been using them right along.

I always install my plug-ins into a separate folder on my root drive. That way I can troubleshoot/update more easily if need be.

By any chance if you are finding your 11.0.1 update to Fail , please check your antivirus blocked/quarantined files settings. Chances are it may have blocked/deleted file from Adobe server . In case that is happening unblock Adobe or provide exception to the Updates coming from Adobe Server.

Please inform if the problem is still not solved with these steps.

Continuing to what Steve and John said , if you still want to remove 32 bit version of Photoshop , then Uninstall whole Photoshop CS4 , again install and select only 64 bit version of Photoshop while installing . But yet again if you need some plugins that are availaible only with 32 bit app , you may need to reinstall 32 bit Photoshop app.

Just an FYI that Nvida now has updates available for laptop video
cards that according to Nvidia address some of the issues discussed in
the forum. This should be good news for many. Unfortunately Sony Vaio
users are directed to sony for oem update of video driver, and sony
has no video driver releases that align with this update nor will they
make any promises of an update in the near future. I love my Vaio, but
this is a big deal as I see it. Has anyone using a VAIO attempted to
install the updated drivers directly from Nvidia? I'm reminded that I
need to update my video driver each time I open Photoshop. I know that
an updated driver is available for my card, but I can't get it through
the oem...so what do I do?

the Spherize filter may be able to do the trick. Filter > Distort > Spherize, then adjust settings as necessary.
The following page gives a pretty good step-by-step for this:

<http://www.marcofolio.net/photoshop/create_a_fish_eye_lens_effect_in_photoshop.html>

I prefer, however, to use the Warp transformation, since it has a Fisheye preset. Select the area of the image that you want to make fisheye (select all if you want) then Edit > Transform > Warp. In the Tool Options bar, select Fisheye as Warp type. You can adjust the amount of warping by dragging the control point up or down.

The Bloat command in the Liquify filter works well for that also.

I am taking a graphic image class that uses Photoshop and Illustrator. I am using CS4 Extended (64 bit, I assume, since I'm running XP 64-bit).

When I save a .psd document in CS4 and send it to my teacher, who is using CS3, she can't open it. She gets the error message "This layered photoshop file was not saved with a composite image."

Fortunately my teacher is cool and has been letting me submit my images in other formats, even though the layers can't be seen.

Is this an issue of compatibility between CS3 and CS4, or 64-bit and 32-bit?

Thanks,
Debbie

FWIW I don't even own any plug-ins and have used many selection tools and
know how to make a decent selection
I use color range, magic wand, magnetic lasso, refine edges and combos of
those
Also tried Russell Browns channel technique for flying hair etc (his example
is on a plain gray cyc) and that hideous pen tool

a complicated mask make might take me a couple hours and I feel my time is
worth more

the service bureau does it for $2.50 overnight
the one I sent was FREE as a trial of their service
and I was quite pleased with it

for me the choice to farm out that un-creative task depends on the job,
things like number of images to complete in the time frame given
I prefer to use my time with an image for more the subjective changes, like
color balance, light, filters, adding creative techniques, fixing what I
want to

it is like the choice to use a lab to print or do it all yourself
benefits to both and choice dictated by the assignment
after all once we didn't have to sit and process all our own images they
went to an E6 lab
and we paid them to do it

so many things we did manually can now be done by a computer program such as
replacing part of the background with parts from another frame
adding softer depth of field by a plug in
skin smoothing etc
even windows live has stitching (even a little kid can do it as the
commercial shows)
resisitance is futile

the photographer I work for shoots gorgeous locations and is good at

UMM I think he needs to select and cut out just the WHEELS and apply to the
car picture

read the rest of his post

making selections is too much to type
there are many techniques and many tutorials

basically once you got the wheel selected just open car image and drag the
selection over the other picture (or copy/paste)
then use edit>transform to resize or change perspective to fit
if the wheel is the same for front and back
drag wheel layer to the paper icon to dupe it and use move tool to place
over other wheel

save the layered doc as PSD in case you need to edit
and use save as.. or save for web to make a flattened copy

Hi. I'm a newbie to Photoshop and I want to know what is the easiest way to do one of the basic things in Photoshop: knock out part of a photo. For instance, if there's a photo of a kid at the beach, I want to eliminate the beach part and just retain the kid. The simplest way I've found to do this is the EXTRACT tool (under the FILTER menu) where you highlight what you want with this green highlighter tool and then fill and extract the part you want. Am I on the right track? Is this the basic way to accomplish this task? Any other tips? I'm using Photoshop CS3 but will soon get CS4. Thanks.

Long Story Short, the hard drive where I had installed my PS3E died, so I bought a new 500G hard drive to replace it. I also bought a laptop the same day.
When I try to register on either computer, Adobe tells me that my numbers are invalid. I assure you They Are Correct and They Are Quite Valid.

So when I signed up a moment ago, when I included my serial number, I GOT A MESSAGE SAYING THAT MY NUMBER HAS ALREADY BEEN USED, so apparently It Is Valid.

When I signed up to post on this forum, I received a message from Adobe saying that Someone Else was using my name, and it suggested that I include My Bloody Middle Initial!

Is it just me, or is This Absolutely The Most Inept System on Earth?

I need to register or apparently I will not be able to upgrade.

Can you say Better Business Bureau or States Attorney General Office?
