I went into the payloads/AdobeBridge3All folder and tried to mount AdobeBridge3All.dmg.

Did the same here and it mounted fine. So yeah - get another disc. In the meantime, if you're impatient you might try downloading the 30 day trial version and using your supplied serial number to register and activate. Not sure if Adobe provides a special serial for converting trial versions to retail but it's worth a shot. I'm thinking it should work fine.

Ann -
David is not trying to use an "improper upgrade path". The file he mentions is in the installer setup - it's a mountable file that he cannot mount. He's only doing this to test the integrity of the install files. It would appear that they are corrupt. It happens.

Phil:

The Upgrade path was just a possibility because he mentioned upgrading only Photoshop CS4 and Bridge CS4 from the CS3 Web Suite; and the Adobe policy has normally meant either buying a Suite-to-Suite upgrade or installing FULL versions of an individual application.

David still needs to call Customer Service anyway.

Phil,
Thanks for confirming. Just to clarify, the Bridge installer component of the Photoshop CS4 disk (DVD) is corrupted and will not mount using the finder or Disk Utility. I was able to mount it with Toast of all things but there is clearly something wrong with it. The Finder balks at copying anything from the mounted image "file damaged" type of error. This confirms for me that it will not install correctly because the installer disk is damaged. I wasn't trying to install Bridge by itself, just trying figure out what is wrong.

I talked to my IT guys and they are getting me a new disk. Annoying but I would rather have this problem than a conflict that required uninstalling/reinstalling this and that.

Ann,
You DO get Bridge if you only install InDesign or only install Illustrator. Or only Photoshop. It is not tied to Photoshop alone. It is in essence tied to the Suites and you are unable to NOT install Bridge (should you so wish) when you install a Suite or part thereof (doesn't matter which Suite). You also get it when installing a standalone version of one of the Adobe apps, at least with Illustrator or InDesign (the other ones I've never seen as standalones and don't know). Bridge is not only used for photos. It is also used for vector art from Illustrator and previewing InDesign pages before openign or palcing them and previewing pdfs and a lot of other files, plus for placing images into either Indesign or Illustrator. And of course for the collaboration between the Suite apps of the same version.

Christoph,

just to make sure: With »flatten« You do mean reduce to the background
layer and not just reducing the file-complexity by merging groups or such?

That terminology ("reduce to the background layer") is not used in the English version of Photoshop. Not even "reduce". :)

The menu item labeled "Auf die Hintergrundebene Reduzieren" (oder so was ähnliches) in German is labeled with a single word in English: Flatten.

I know how hard it is to refer to specifics in a version in a different language when you don't have it available. It's not a question of just translating the word. "Layers" in the German version are not layers at all but planes (»Ebenen«). Took me a few seconds to figure that one out. :)

The concept of "Reducing" is not used in the English version at all. "Sichtbare Ebenen auf eine Ebene reduzieren" is simply Merge Visible.

Usw…

What I found useful, from a linguistic point of view, was to download each of the User Guides/Help Files PDFs in the languages I'm interested in. They all amounted to just over half a Gigabyte. :D

Nini,

Ann chimed in a bit ahead of me on this. But for heat and fan issues, the first thing I would suspect is air circulation, either due to the physical location of the computer or dirt and dust inside. Considering that your machines are used 24/7, I would suspect the latter. I'd recommend that IT routinely pop the covers and clean out the accumulated matter inside. It will go a long way to prolong computer life and reliability.

That may the reason for hard drive, logic board, and RAM failure. Then again, as drives are mechanical devices, they may have just worn out. I'm surprised that you don't mention keyboard and mouse failures.

Just a note about the 8GB RAM limitation of the 2009 Mac Pro Quad Core. That was Apple's stated limit all right but OWC has just released 4 GB Modules for that model which increases the limit to 16 GB. Cost is about $1,000 for 4 x 16GB modules.

Re vacuuming: Be sure to use a small hand-held, low-suction vacuum cleaner. A state worker I know used an industrial-strength unit and literally suctioned off some components from the logic board.

Might have needed vacuuming, I agree on that. I know how dusty the floors they stand on get (the cleaners have a hard time to really clean the floors as it is always people working there)... on the other hand, as they are used 24/7 by various users who share the machines, it is not only dust but also sandwiches and coffee and water and lunch and I don't know what that get into some of them and we really don't have the opportunity to vacuum them (editors are hard to get to move away from their computers except when it dies and they wait for an exchange... they hardly move away long enough for us to attach the cables and such). Only when it is already too late we have an opportunity to lay hands on the machines. I AM part of the IT department.

Mice and keyboards are regarded as disposables and are simply exchanged when they stop functioning. We go through an extreme amount of keyboards in particular, but also mice and chargers for portables (their cords get stamped on, burned and broken, yes, even the ones with magnets).

We actually believe the situation will be better with the iMacs as they will be ON the tables and not under them...

I recently found adobe tutorials at www.designprovideo.com
which IMHO provide great core training in Photoshop. Some other online training I've found to be a bit overwhelming (too much info given too quickly)- but so far the Photoshop CS4 101 by Jim Kanter has hit the spot and answered the questions I needed answering.

I think that it has always been like this.

I had this issue when I first started using CS4 and it definitely hasn't always been like this in previous versions I've used.

I know I can disable zoom resizing windows in the prefs, but that also
throws off my workflow.

How so? I'd imagine this would simply get you back on track.

Installing a new hard drive shouldn't take more than 15 minutes to replace.
The only caveat is to double-check if you need a jumper connected and
between which two posts if you do. And you probably need to format it
HSF+. OK...two caveats!

Neil, I'm formatting my new internal drive now. I'm not sure what you meant about jumper. There are two cables connected to each internal drive. The options for formatting don't seem to include HSF+. I'm writing the drive to zeros using Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

This will take a while so if I'm not doing this right, maybe you (or someone else if you're not around) can let me know.

This new drive is a Seagate.

Thanks!

If you have a SATA drive you don't need to worry about jumpers.

Hi,

Just to revisit this, the problem is that when the plug-in is set to return a new layer it fails. What you need to do is check 'Disable Output to New ayer' in the Alien Skin dialog.

If you want to mimic output to a new layer, include a 'Duplicate Layer' command in the action just before calling the 3rd party plug-in.

thx,
steve

I've been around so long I actually understand Gernot Hoffman.

I expect a computer to be a tool and t do what I want it to do, not what it wants to do, which is why I don't use Windows. Icons and folders are just pointers and should have nothing to do with the data itself.

I enjoyed the old SIG despite its flaws. A more close knit group and collegial.
Many of the big names contributed. I remember a long chat with Margulis, and Schewe also.

I was assured that OpenGL was installed correctly on my Mac but it doesn't work in PS. I was told it must be an Adobe issue. In preferences the OPENGL drawing is grayed out. I've ran Adobe updates and restarted my Mac and still get errors "only works with OpenGL documents".

You need one whose driver supports OpenGL2 and Shader Model 3, with 256 MB of V-RAM on board.
