" Again I am going to ask. Does anybody know of any Printer/Driver combinations that actually work correctly with CS4 and Leopard?
Sure. Here are a few Epson models that I know of: R1900, R2400, R2880, 3800, 4800, 4880, 7800, 7880, 7900, 9800, 9880, 9900, 11880. Just as long as you're printing via the RGB color driver."
I've been running tests on my 9900 in the past few days. Yesterday I printed Gretag TC9.18 RGB profile targets from a MacPro running 10.5.5. As far as I know there is only one 9900 driver as it's so new. I printed the target from CS3 and CS4 both in exactly the same manner - No Color Management in the Adobe print dialog and in the Epson driver with the same Velvet Fine Art media setting chosen.
Comparing the two data files read on a Spectrolino/Spectroscan with UV filter using Gretag's Measure Tool, the two data files show a maximum Delta E of an astonishing 20.72 on the patch with the greatest difference and many patches in the 10-16 Delta E range.
This indicates something VERY different going on in the data paths between CS3 and CS4. Visually the CS4 version looks just slightly LIGHTER than the CS4 version, but it's the extreme Delta E difference that is so troubling.
Given this massive difference, how the hell is Epson making profiles for these printers? You would have to know exactly how your customers were going to print.
My contact inside Epson was at the studio today (Southern Ca. advantage) and I've sent her copies of the data files as well as screen shots of the Measure Tools comparison along with some of Eric Chan's info. So far no one I've spoken to at Epson really seems to understand the complexity of the problem.
I have not yet generated the CS4 profiles and made comparison print from the Leopard/CS4 combo. That may have to wait until after I print a 400 print order in the next week and a half.
CS4 and Tiger is no problem at all, but you can't run Tiger on a new MacPro. For the meantime, it's going to have to be CS3 on the MacPro until this mess is figured out.

A sure indication that that CM is not being turned off in the CS4/Leopard Epson driver combination. I bet if you change the profiles in the ColorSync Utility that you will get a different output.
Somewhere somehow the assigned profiles (look in the CU) for the selected media is still being picked up in the printflow even with CM turned off in the driver.
The latest drivers for the Canon iPFX100 series printers get this right, so it can be done.

If that's the case, and it may be, then, in order to print to Epson with CS4 and Leopard, you'd have to change the CU default profile every time you changed your media. I'll experiment with this and see.

Macs have a default gamma of 1.8, and PCs have a default gamma of 2.2. I have several colors, for example a peach color, #FFE2A8, which I like on my Mac. Is there a way to use Photoshop to find out the hex# of the color which will look on a PC, like #FFE2A8 does on a Mac?
Thanks very much in advance to all for any info!

Vik,
Apple used to use a 1.8 gamma setting. And some tools, such as monitor calibrators may even suggest you use it.
Don't. Use 2.2.

Lundberg02,
For some reason the adobe forums are one of the few forums left on the internet where a small number of participants still like to flame and insult people for asking questions. It's rude and you should get over it.
If you would like to see proof that the Mac OS monitor calibrator does default to gamma 1.8, and describes it saying "This is the traditional setting for Mac OS computers," please look at this link:

Neil,
Thanks very much for your response. Unfortunately my colors for this project have all been developed using gamma 1.8. Is there a way to use Photoshop to find out the hex values of the equivalent colors under gamma 2.2?

From: Neil_Keller@adobeforums.com
Vik,
As I said, some of the monitor calibrators may still suggest a 1.8 gamma setting. For years, Macs used 1.8 gamma and 5000°K color temperature. The current standard for Macs and Windows is 2.2 gamma and 6500°K.
I wouldn't take Lundberg's comment to heart. It's more a gentle tap with a handful of popcorn than full-fledged trebuchet attack.

Craig, I don't know how you count the years but InDesign has been around since 1999 when it was released. It is neither a few years or 4 or so... And it is used by a huge number of people around the world who lay out pages.
Illustrator (1.0) has been around even longer, since 1986 (shipping in January 1987).
Photoshop was first released (for the Mac) in 1990. For Win the first version of Photoshop was in 1992.
Apart from that I find it more important to get the shortcuts consolidated to be the same for all the applications in the Suite for the same actions than to appease some Photoshop-users who do not want to change their ways of doing things... ;) Shortcuts change all the time between versions in all applications. Just live with it and adjust. It is not the end of the world.

yes, I read the Wiki too, but either way, its hard to unlearn 20 years of photoshop training (well, I've only been using it for about 16). I hadn't realized that inDesign was around in 99, although it had nowhere near the users thanks to the fact that it actually had competition with Quark at the time. As I did mention before, I probably wouldn't care if they changed the commands, but left it as a series that I could control with the editor. You still can't edit the cmd-1/2/3/~ back to the way it was (or should be!).
Photoshop never really had true competition on a mass market (sure there were options like Quantel Paintbox or maybe Live Picture), whereas Illustrator and InDesign had major heat from other vendors (Freehand and Quark). I could argue that perhaps Photoshop has a larger user base. Obviously this is just speculation, since I have no idea if they can track that (I have CS4 premium, but I only launch Illustrator/Indesign, etc on a rare basis but use photoshop about 95% of the time. I'm probably not the majority, but I can't imagine that there are more illustrator users than Photoshop users!

Paul...YOU ARE THE MAN!!! That's pretty much the sweetest script EVER!!
Not that I am trying to complicate things, but out of curiosity, I don't suppose there is any way to set up a script to do exactly what the ScanToFile.jsx script does, but perhaps also add approximately 100px to the bottom edge of the extracted images?
Have a look at the following image:
<http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/54787/Screenshots/Far-Side-Comics.png>
It's indicative of a large group of images I am trying to extract, and the caption that appears on the bottom edge of the image is consistently getting chopped off by the automatic Crop & Straighten feature...
I know that this task is likely impossible, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask...Thanks again for referring me to the ScanToFile.jsx script!

You could add a 100 pixels to each but it would be after the crop and straighten had taken place so you would still loose that data.
I did like the pic though, and wondered if the pages are all of the same type/size maybe you could use a piece of black card with holes cut out to make a mask and use that when scanning, that should define the edges?

I did that, and then cleaned my fonts cache in OnyX.
The other thing I've noticed-- now that I'm paying more attention to "All threads, hierarchically" in the Activity Monitor-- is that I have this old PowerPC program for an HP Scanjet scanner, which has some kind of "HPScanjetManager.app" that starts up in LaunchD and takes up about 40% of processor (40% of one core, that is). Still that's eating a lot of CPU and I am pretty sure it's not actually doing anything productive (since scanning is currently not in use).
I forced the ScanjetManager.app to quit, and immediately saw my CPU usage drop to near zero. And here's the other thing: when I quit the HP program, Activity Monitor's PMTool, which was itself eating 40% of CPU, also dropped to under 1%. Related? Maybe it's time to get a new scanner.

Look in System/Library/StartupItems
(and also in the root level and User Libraries)
and remove ScanJet.app from those locations.
Then reboot.

Interestingly enough, Scanjet Manager.app is not in the StartupItems folder. Shouldn't matter, though, as I just uninstalled the HP program completely and will only use it on my old PowerPC machine. No reason to clog this machine with old junk software.

Dragging elements from one image to another via tabs does actually work.
You can't simply drag and let go ... the key is drag to the tab, hold for a second until the tabbed image comes to the front ... and THEN let go.

Agreed on the "slowly". If grafting between docs on a regular basis, the frustration is certainly understandable.

Hi,
I've been having some trouble with Adobe CS3 (especially Photoshop) on Apple OS X Leopard. Does anyone have experience with CS4 on this platform, and if so, is it better in terms of compatibility and/or memory management? Or is it just a bunch of new features? I would really like improved stability for my Adobe software.
