Also, is the scratch disk on a partition?...If so it's going to cause performance issues a single drive cannot write to multiple locations simultaneously - a dedicated separate drive is needed for the scratch ....and I also wonder if 10gb is enough.

I haven't been able to find much, but I did find someone who claimed that everything was working for them and they had a 8400GS.

Is anyone from Adobe able to pitch in?

Hi,
I have a low resolution image 'A' from someone that has been jpg'd, perhaps a few times. It has pixels that are visible without too much effort, and edges to objects that are not regularly stepped, say 3px wide then 1px down in places (lets call this vari-stepped). Studying the image, the pixels are in fact formed into blocks or squares of pixels. I think we all know what I am describing !

I now have taken into this image part of another far better image 'B' and need to make it look like it belongs there. Adjusting colours and focus and softening edges is one thing, but it needs that jpg artefacting adding. Simply dealing with the addition beforehand and lowering its resolution doesnt do it, as the resulting pixels are not blocky, edges are not vari-stepped. The jpg feel to it is not there.

What controls can I use to achieve this on the image in that layer after its brought in, with Photoshop CS2 or even P'shop 7 which I still use as I prefer layer links there ! By working in the image I can compare effects to the recipient image. Perhaps only the latest Pshop has what I need ?

Pixelate filter is not enough, its too crude, lowest setting is too much, it doesnt do the blocky look, or the vari-steps.

Getting a better image 'A' is not an option.

Wish List. It would be great to have an ability to tell P'shop to analyse the image 'A' and apply settings to make image 'B' the same.

Heya, EnviroG...

I know it's a rare need, but I run across it as well, often enough that I've asked about it and requested it, too.

I've long wished for a filter that would allow me to add real JPEG artifacts as a filter, with the ability to adjust the compression with a slider and watch the changes in a preview.

I've looked around a few times, and haven't ever seen a 3rd-party filter that does it, so our only choice is to save out separate files with compression applied and composite them back into the original we're trying to match.

Hi,
I don't see PhotoshopCS4 mentioned as certified for Win XP Pro 64bit !
Now seeing that 64bit gets you more than 4Gb RAM and thats a good thing for Photoshop, is anyone using any version of Photoshop on 64bit XP pro and is it ok ?

What version are you with ?

There is no tech support if you run it on 64bit. As 64bit Pro and Photoshop are two 'professional' things to have, I am at a loss to know why Adobe have ignored 64bit Pro users.

...and before someone suggests I get Vista 64, where Adobe have looked at 64bit function, its not an option as my serious 3D CAD program company warn me against it, its resource hungry and not good for such progs, this after testing. Also it would be the death for progs I use that are XP ok and not supported under Vista.
I have an 8Gb PC and wish to continue with Pshop.

I use the 64 bit versions of Lightroom 2.2 and Photoshop CS4 on windows XP64.

I am having some trouble starting XP64 after installing PS CS4, and it sometimes takes a couple of restarts to get up an running. I installed Acronis at about the same time, and I really thing that program is the culprit, but I have not tried to pin down the cause. Once I am up and running, Lightroom and Photoshop work fine. I have a Q6600 and 8 GB Ram.

I am not a very advanced user. I use most features in Lightroom but not much of the brush. In PS I basically work with adjustment layers, layer masks and channels. The option to merge to panorama works fine. I have not tried to activate the GPU accelerated features.

I print two sided brochures set up for for tri-fold panels and they always line up- all sides & fold gutters. Create both sides on the same canvas using the same guides for all, Side one in one layer set & side 2 in another.

The reason that desktop printers cannot align front and back properly is because they 'float' through, also the reason that XEROX copiers have trouble too.

HP Color LaserJets have no such difficulty- at least when deselecting "Reduce Image to Borders" in the PS print options dialogue box.

I have Windows beta 32 on a test box for 5 days now and it runs great.
Fast and solid I had to upgrade some drivers but just selecting the "upgrade driver" when I pressed the button windows went out to the net and found the driver and installed it.

Then everything worked again.
I installed some third party plug ins and they also work.

This is a 5 year old box with a cheep card no working GPU and one gig on memory.

much better than Vista.

I'm running CS4 on win7 ultimate x64 and haven't seen any real problems. There
is a new UI feature in win7 where, if you drag a window's title bar to the to of
the screen, it will maximize the window and that doesn't work - no real surprise
since Adobe doesn't play by the OS' UI rules anyway. ;-)

Hey,

Our design company is looking to structure itself better. After using
excel-based timesheets for 15 years (ugh), we're looking to switch to an
intranet-based project management system to track projects' evolution, hours
invested, company billing, etc. Or rather, a bunch of us in management are
looking to convince the higher-ups that this is now necessary.

Basically, we're looking to adopt a system like Jira
(http://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/) or Fogbugz
(http://www.fogcreek.com/FogBUGZ/).

So I was wondering if there was either :

1) A well-recognized industry leader in project management software (like
Wordpress is to blogs)

2) Or, alternatively, a Graphic Design-specific project management system

Either of the two would certainly re-assure my superiors enough to go ahead
with the idea. Being able to do all our billing with the same software would
also be a tremendous plus.

Thanks!

Then what you want is a genuine Material Requirements Planning
(MRP,MRPII) system in conjunction with a Critical Path Precedence
Modeling system (as you imagine it with visual charts (Gant), to show
the chain of dependencies over a project's lifetime.

Or continue with the Mickey Mouse amateur crap you point to.

Your superiors are not likely smart enough or motivated enough to
consider a real solution because they have not come up with the same to
date.

What Mike said. Also: you should never upgrade without at least trying the software out for a month on your machine ... there is a 30 day free trial.

Others here may (probably will) rave about features, but if you are on an old, and perhaps clunky machine, then you will not get the same levels of performance. Try it out first, and know what you are getting.
