What is it with Photoshop? This issue has been around for the last 4 versions at least, Quick Mask stops working, I am getting fed up with having tio reset photosjhop to its defaults, because this means that it takes me a goo 30 min to reset all of my settings again, and as this has now happened 4 times today, it is costing me money, at least CS3 was a little bit more reliable than CS4, I certainly will not be upgrading our copy of Photoshop.

Has anyone got a simple way to get Quick Mask working again without loosing the other settings from Photoshop...

Or does anyone know why this happens? My system is 4 x Quad Core CPU, running 16Gb RAM and 2 x 8800 Video Cards on x64 Windows XP, so it cannot be down to memory.

Just wish Adobe would sort out these bugs!

What do you mean by "Quick Mask stops working"?

One of the most elementary precautions used by Photoshop users, to quickly reset their preferences, is to keep a copy of a 'good' set in a separate folder and to drag these into the appropriate Adobe folder if something goes wrong.

Hmmmm... I've never had that happen. If you are resetting Preferences often there may be a bigger problem with your system.

One way to make it easy is to copy your "clean" Preferences files and stash them somewhere. When you need to reset, just drag or Copy/Paste the clean file in and replace the corrupted one. Takes almost no time at all.

Good Point... Still very annoying though!

What I mean by Quick Mask not working, is that when you select on it, and start to paint, no red mask appearing. and no mask being generated, this is the most used tool for me, and it just gets a bit annoying that Adobe have not found out why this is caused and at least found a way of stopping it from happening...

The Quick Selection tool does the same job without the red effect. With the Masks Panel in CS4 it's even better.

Afterthought: Maybe you could get your red mask back by resetting just the Brush tool. Also, a Wacom tablet may be causing it.

You mention that a Wacom tablet might be affecting it, this is the first time anyone has mentioned this, do you know why ???? Main reason is that we all use Wacom's here, various versions and obviously various versions of their drivers as well, mind you all are running under the latest version of thier drivers for the tablet in question.

As for the Masks Panel! Never really used it, so use to using quick masks, will have a look and see if this is as useable to us here, I take it that you can just paint a mask as quickly and as user friendly as the quick mask, and that it displays what area you are masking? Sorry for sounding a bit daft here, but we all work differently and I have been using quick mask for most of the masking in the artwork we do for years now, and I know that I am only using about 20% of Photoshops features.

Wacoms have a habit of 'neutralising' the brush if the mouse is too near the tablet when using the pen and vice versa. Sometimes it requires the item not in use to be well away from the action. Try temporarily unplugging the tablet if this doesn't help. If that cures it, you may need updated drivers.

move the mouse away from the tablet when using the stylus, and vice versa.

OK, that wont be it then guys, no mice at all! just tablets, and all running on the latest drivers anyway. Worth a try though!

OK, but did you try the other suggestion of resetting the Brush Tool when it happens?

Since I don't have CS4 I am obviously out of touch, but is there truly no C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS4\Presets folder these days? Copying into the appropriate subfolders or just dragging into them would seem to be the easy way.

Not that I could see in the beginning. When you first open up a NEW version of Photoshop, at least from what I could figure out, presets were not added to the

C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Adobe Photoshop CS4 Settings

folder so it didn't matter that I had added all my previous presets to the folders in the main Program Folders, the trick was getting the presets in the above mentioned folders overwriting the ones that were created, as explained above.

Have you tried the Image Processor?

I did look at the Image Processor and can see there's a "resize to fit" option but if I say put 75px by 75px in there and the original image isn't a square, it'll go wonky, I thought...

Thanks

Martin

I think I read that it will run, but it is not supported by Adobe.

I have also read that some people have had problems.

Maybe, but don't look for too much in the way of support. If you're
going that route, you really should upgrade. Photoshop CS4 is native 64 bit.

When I went from CS3 to CS4 I couldn't install CS4 because of a profile
being locked. Even with technical supports help we couldn't get the file
rights/permissions to unlock the file. The only way I could get CS4 to
install was to backup my data (easy since most is on a secondary drive)
format, reinstall Windows and then install CS4. This worked fine. It is a
lot of work and yah it does miff me a bit but I look at the bright side of
it and that is it fushed Windows system and now everything is nice and clean
and tidy. I like to compare to have a stopped drain, you can use liquid
plumber to get the water flowing again, but using a drain snake really
cleans it out and removes any nasty build up. Since when you install and
uninstall stuff you never really get rid of all of it, doing this from time
to time isn't a bad idea. But, having to do this to get a program installed
is a bit of a miff.

Yes, I did remove CS3 before hand, that was one of the first things I did
and one of the first things technical support asked about. In the end it was
all down to one profile file that just wouldn't let itself be overwritten
and there was nothing that could be done to get to let itself be
overwritten. I have had this happen with two files on my desktop, they were
zero byte files but I couldn't delete the icons for them.

Hi, I am trying to insert text on my image, (by using photoshop 7.0). I know there is a default style button, "Faux Bold', to simulate the bold style. But I would like to increase the Bold size, is there any way I could do that?

Use a stroke layer effect. Be sure to preview at 100% zoom.

Kaysa: Better if you got a real bold font, the problem with using a stroke is that the min stroke is 1pt, but you really need less, no more than .5pt because the applied stroke will overlap the other letters. I cannot recall if you can in PS7, but increase the letterspacing for legibility.

This is not a solution for me beacause toolboxes on my main monitor take all screen space and, with your solution, my images are opened in a 1px wide tab...

Futhermore, when my image opens in this 1px tab, I have to retract a toolbox to see it and move it on the second monitor and then when the image is fullscreen on the second monitor => OpenGL is disabled ! And I have to restart Photoshop to re-enable it...

That's not that I really "need" OpenGL but, as CS4 without OpenGL is a lot slower than CS3....

Any advice would be appreciated.

In CS4 you have the options to set the Info palette to "actual layer" or "all layers". The problem is, I can see no difference. The values are always the same.
