Once you have everything working as you like, buy an external USB hard drive (larger than your boot drive) and make a full system copy so you may restore in case of problems

Terabyte's Image program makes a full drive image for backup - it will span multiple CD/DVD discs or write to a USB hard drive - as far as I know (I have multiple identical 80Gig boot drives which I rotate via removable drive housings, creating a backup and restore before I install or remove any programs) this program goes directly to the drive hardware to backup and restore EVERYTHING on a drive, even the "hidden" parts that software vendors use to store registration information

Note - my sister-in-law got hit by a destructive virus in early November (she was one of those people who got infected between the time the virus hit the internet and her anti-virus company updated their program files) and I was, since I had just made a full backup for her in late October, able to put her computer back in order with only the loss of a couple weeks worth of emails and a Word document or two... and then the first order of business after the full restore was to immediately run Windows Update and go to her anti-virus vendor's web site for an upate so she would stay safe

Anyway, since she does not understand making data backups herself, Image was the ONLY thing that saved the day and kept her from losing ALL of her data files

Dos version is small enough to run off a 3.5 inch boot disk
<http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/image-for-dos.htm>

Linux version creates a bootable CD, you MUST use this version if you have a USB mouse or keyboard (the DOS version won't work if you have a USB mouse or keyboard) or if you don't have a 3.5 inch boot disk

Mark,

Are you saying that the problem was there during beta? Was it ever fixed then?

So I can't really use PS at all right now.

Kinda sad when lack of video card "acceleration" prevents you from using a photo editor. In any case, the older video card registry "hack" worked for me. I'm up and running with CS4 and quite happy with it now.

I have exactly the same issue with CS4. Drivers are up to date, but cursors on brushes, eraser, dodging and blurring all either go to a partial segment - eg a 45-60 degree arc - or freeze and refuse to resize or show themselves. Particularly irritating when resizing a brush, where Esc sometimes cures a freeze, but usually you have to reselect the tool.

Photoshop is no more fussy than the OS it runs on, particularly the
abomination that is Vista (the Mac OS is hardly any better).
If you were to say CS3 was a bug-ridden application that was never fixed by
Adobe I might agree.
The truth is that the GPU processing in CS4 is a great idea but
underwhelming in everyday use. If you have been using CS3 with a fast
processor and adequate RAM the real world differences are barely noticeable.
I have read that Adobe is limited because of a lack of uniform software
protocols to access ATI vs Nvidia GPUs: a little bribe to Adobe might help
one company's marketing efforts over another, and since Mac desktops mostly
ship with ancient bottom of the barrel ATI videocards anyway . . .

My suggestion is for Adobe to make a video test tool that users could
use to validate their video hardware and software

Well, see it that way: The trial is your testing tool. As your failed attempts with that game-centric tool more than eloquently prove, there's a fundamental difference between an abstract capabilities test and using features in a practical implementation. Come to think of it, any testing tool that would provide a maximum breadth of possible scenarios would probably be quite complex in itself, drawing resources from fixing stuff in the programs themselves. I know it's a bitch, but consider that vendors of other programs face the same situation. It may look smooth on the surface, but from personal involvement I know that even e.g. in 3D programs sometimes programmers will implement a specific workaround for only a given graphics card or series of cards that does not comply to the (theoretically) unified standards of OpenGL. It's not much different for Adobe, for sure. At best, one could argue that they had all the money to buy every card and test it, but even that doesn't hold true. In a way, that race has long been lost, as sad as it is...

It's not just Vista - I get the same with PS CS4 on XP. Fresh install, too, so unless some plugins crept in there without my asking for them then that's not the issue either.

Import the video as a new video layer (Layer --> Video --> New layer from file), add your watermark as another layer, then export the whole shebang using File --> Export --> Render Video. Be aware though, that there are severe limitations in what formats Photoshop accepts, exports and how they are compressed, so you may wish to check out After Effects or other tools...

I'm pretty sure he did, since he referenced my post #5.

The Quick Selection Tool is easily the best new tool in the last several generations of Photoshop.

Another note is that Select>Color Range has been improved in CS4 to allow for better local selections.

When we did that, it advised us to look in the goodies folder on the application disc--which we don't have because we downloaded upgrade from the site.

If you go to Preferences > Interface and uncheck "Open documents as tabs"
and "Enable floating document window docking" you should never see a tab
again, no matter what.

Nope, that doesn't work either. Dragging photos into CS4 still reverts to a tab (regardless of whether other photos are present or not).

I'm with the OP on this one ... it's a pain to have to keep tearing the tabbed images away to work on them when tabs are supposedly TURNED OFF.

You guys need Macs then. B)

BTW how is duplicate the layer and point it to the image you want it in too much trouble? this way has exact placement. you can even have photoshop create a new doc to place the layers in.

Thanks for the input. I chose to go with AutoFX, but am having serious problems.

I recently purchased the Photo/Graphic Edges 6.0 software from AutoFX, can be found here:
<http://www.autofx.com/products/pge/detail.html>

I am running Windows XP with 2G of RAM. I am using this s/w as a stand-alone app, as opposed to a plugin for Adobe Photoshop.

The problem is that the program randomly crashes quite frequently, resulting in the following pop-up error message:
Windows XP pops up with the following:
PGE_6 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry the inconvenience.
If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.
Please tell Microsoft about this problem. We have created an error report that you can send to us. We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous.
To see what data this report contains Click Here.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the program and still have the same issues. I've searched and found a thread from a couple of years ago where someone else had the same problems. I fear that this may be a software issue. Here is the link to what I found:
<http://graphicsgalaxy.com/forums/thepluginsite/viewtopic.php?t=1604>

I posted on the above thread and also submitted a problem report to Auto FX.

No other program on my computer crashes randomly like this.

Any suggestions?

Thanks so much,
Angela

I have been using CS4 for two days. It is slower than CS3, the interface is horrible and help does not work at all. I have posted elsewhere on the major bug that cursor outlines either vanish, go to a partial arc or freeze. This is really not good enough.

Help: the on-line help does not work. You get a generic page. If you try to download the PDF, it fails. The on-line help is useless. There is no help supplied withthe disk.

Image resize: if you want to resize and image you cannot do so in pixels. Why woudl anyone resize a screen image in - for example - points, which is one of the options on offer?

Brushs: Load gives a windows screen that is blank, withthe option to load .abx (I think)- files. None are shown, despite Win Explorer showing dozens of them.

The standard windows maximise - minimise-exit symbols are sometimes surrounded with windows colours and sometimes grey. Maximising an image window hide them and tabbing with F through the options never shows them.

Stacking when minimised does not allow the stack to be moved, but when you size to minimum it leaps unpredictably so you get a stack that just happens to be where it wants.

I find it extraordinary that actions such as dodging is noticably slower than in CS3, where it was essentially real time on any good processor. This has a 200-400mS lag. Menus take noticable time to disappear and dragging causes skewing and leaping in ways I haven't seem since Photoshop 8.

Frankly, I think I want my money back. Certainly, the company will not be buying this upgrade for our staff.

does your computer meet the minimum system requirements? for most of us using CS4 its much faster than CS3.
