I agree, At least 20% of my work is presented to my clients via this very useful cs3 facility. I was thoroughly dissapointed after purchasing the cs4 suite to find that I cannot do a pdf presentation as seamlessly as was on cs3. I am now reverting back to using cs3 bridge until this is resolved.

a very disssapointed adobe client

APOLOGIES!!!

I just found it......

Using the Adobe Output Module script, you can create Adobe PDF contact sheets and presentations in Adobe Bridge. Contact sheets let you easily preview and catalog groups of images by displaying a series of thumbnails on a single page. PDF presentations let you use a variety of images to create a multipage document for slide show presentation. You can set options for image quality in the PDF, specify security settings, and set the document to open automatically in full-screen mode in Adobe Acrobat. You can also add the filename as a text overlay below each image in the PDF.

1. Select the files or the collection or folder that contains the images you want to include in the contact sheet or presentation.
2. Choose Window > Workspace > Output.
If the Output workspace is not listed, select Adobe Output Module in Startup Scripts preferences.

Adobe Bridge displays the Output panel at the right side of the window and the Folders panel at the left. The Content panel with your selected photos appears at the bottom of the window, and the Preview panel appears in the middle.
3. In the Output panel, select PDF.
4. Choose a layout option from the Template menu.
5. With your photos selected in the Content panel, click Refresh Preview to view the contact sheet in the Output Preview panel.
Note: The Output Preview panel displays only one PDF page.
6. Customize the appearance of the contact sheet by specifying options in the Document, Layout, Overlays, and Watermark areas of the Output panel.
7. (Optional) Change the images in the PDF by navigating to them in the Folders or Favorites panel, and then selecting them in the Content panel. You can also use the Preview panel to preview the images and refine your selection. Drag thumbnails in the Content panel to rearrange the order of the images on the page.
8. Click Refresh Preview at any time to update the PDF and see the changes in the Output Preview panel.
9. For presentations, specify the following options in the Playback panel:

Open In Full Screen Mode
Opens the PDF in full-screen mode in Adobe Acrobat.

Advance Every [x] Seconds
Specifies how long each image is displayed before the presentation advances to the next image. The default duration is 5 seconds.

Loop After Last Page
Specifies that the presentation automatically starts over after reaching the end. Deselect this option to stop the presentation after the final image is displayed.

Transition
Specifies the transition when moving from one image to the next. Choose a transition from the Transition menu. Depending on the transition, you can also specify a Direction and a Speed.

10. If you'd like to automatically open the PDF in Acrobat after you save it, select View PDF After Save at the bottom of the Output panel. Otherwise, just click Save.
11. In the Save (Windows) or Save As (Mac OS) dialog box, enter a name for the PDF, select a destination for the saved file, and then click Save.

Yep, it does work. The problem I have with the output module is that it's creating abnormally large files... as in files that 23+ megs for files that used to be 3 to 4 megs with the same perceived image quality. I think the old tool also gave you a little more control over some other options as well.

Cheers, Joe

I would recommend using the Masks Panel.

Spend a little time learning about that and you'll never miss the clunky old Extract filter.

I've been through the mill, trying to get CS4 Design Premium to install. I finally managed, with the considerable help of a tier three Support Engineer. Since then I've had about a week's exposure to Photoshop CS4. Here's a list of things I don't like and/or those that don't work:

1) Program always crashes when I try to save a GIF file or try to use any of the new 3D tools.
2) I like two-across tool palette. When I drag workspace to left, it covers up this palette.
3) I like to leave three palettes open on the right, History, Characters and Layers. For no earthly reason that I can fathom the Layers palette has gotten considerably wider, and it cannot be reduced horizontally. Oh yes, I could reduce these three to icons, but then I'd be constantly clicking to open them and clicking to close them.
4) Open palettes have foreground precedence. This means that when I try to enlarge my workspace to the right, the workspace scroll bar disappears underneath the palettes.
5) The essentials button is destructive. I found this out the hard way when I clicked it and it wiped out a newly customized workspace. Now I know to save my customized workspace immediately upon completion.
6) Why did Adobe add the Adjustments button. It just creates an extra step when making adjustments. CS3 was smart enough to pop up the correct controls when adjustments were being made. Example: create New Adjustment Layer > Threshold. On my copy of CS4, I have to click Adjustments before the control shows up.
7) The new toolbar (at top of screen) wastes considerable space and is not deselectable. Hint courtesy of Support: Save your custom workspace with a very short name 2-3 characters; then this toolbar will combine with the menu bar.
8) Scrolling through highly magnified images is abysmally slow - much slower than it was on CS3.
9) The clone brush is less accurate in CS4, and it doesn't always turn off when one is finished cloning.
10) None of my CS4 files installed with responsive, indexed Help files. Now, every Help request sends me to a sluggish web site where there are no indices, poorly organized information, and in some cases just a message that Help area is under development.
11) I haven't been able to get the Patch tool to work correctly.
12) When program crashes (not always while attempting to save GIFs or 3D), it does so with generic, uninformative error message. In one week, I have had more Photoshop CS4 crashes than I ever experienced during the lifetime of CS3.
13) Why did the installer leave 34 superfluous language items (ones in anything other than US English in my case) in both the Legal and Lmresources folders? The product is bloated enough without oversights like that.

How many more will I find during the next week? I don't know, but I'm sure there are more to be found. How many of those that I did notice are due to the dreadful suite installer? I don't know the answer to that one either, but I suspect the installer may well have played a role.

I'm sure many will disagree, but IMHO Photoshop CS4's user interface is godawful compared to its predecessors. I can't find a single thing that can be accomplished with less mouse activity or keystrokes than earlier versions, but I have found quite a few things that demand more.

I was fortunate enough to have my installation issues addressed by one of Adobe's top support engineers. Had it not been for that, I'm reasonably certain I'd still be trying to install CS4. I've been using Photoshop since version 3, and the Creative Suites going back to the first one. This is the first time I've ever felt that quality assurance was completely ignored for the sake of meeting a self-imposed release schedule.

As I remarked in one of my earlier email exchanges with Adobe support, "I wish that every software Product Manager would study the reasons why Vista and Office 2007 have gotten such lukewarm receptions." I'm afraid the CS4 team didn't learn from Microsoft's mistakes.

While you obviously have some technical problems, I think your negative reaction to the new GUI betrays a typical resistance to change.

They didn't change the interface just for fun. A lot of thought went into it. I have also been using PS since version 3.0 and have adapted to and revelled in each GUI change.

You may have to change your old habits, but that doesn't make it a bad thing – on the contrary!

Using Bridge CS3 2.1.1.9 and JPEGs are opening with Camera RAW dialog. Prefs are set to open with PS CS3.

Is there anyway to prevent/fix this?

thanks.

In Bridge, Preferences > Thumbnails "Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for JPEG and TIFF files". Uncheck.

In ACR, Preferences "Always open JPEG files with settings using Camera Raw". Uncheck.

And in Photoshop yet another, Preferences > File Handling, "Prefer Adobe Camera Raw for JPEG files". Uncheck.

I never could figure out which one of these actually caused JPEGs to open in ACR, so I would just check or uncheck them all. In CS4 this is mercifully simplified down to one - in ACR where it belongs.

Hello,

This is a very weird problem,
The machine is a simple dell desktop, with Windows XP and Photoshop CS3.

When you're in the user session, you can open one file in Photoshop, but when you try to open a second one, Photoshop crash with a common Windows error message 0x7c928fea memory could not be written.

The computer has been all re installed from Windows to Photoshop, everything's up to date the problem still occures.
The weirdest part is,
When you're in the administrator session, there's no issue.

Thanks !!!

Maybe it was downloaded from the Adobe FTP site, where a trial still exists.

Maybe natashaxx is using Vista (how would we know with this poorly explained issue?). If so, turn off User Account Control (UAC).

Hi guys. I have a 8800 GTX and I've got my hands on PS CS4 but apparently, all that stuff of smooth and continuous zoom in and out, capability of tossing the image is not present on my machine. This may be a stupid question but, do I need to do something on the graphics card so that it will support the GPU improvement?
Thank you.

Thank you for the tip, but it has not solved the issue. I created a new file and reset character. I then typed something and placed in on an arc. This still created a noticeable stretching of the letters.

Basically, it is arching the letters themselves, bending them into the shape of the arc. I am looking for something in Photoshop that allows me to place a word or words on an arc, each letter simply being rotated to sit on the arc.

I don't think the limited text tool of Photoshop can do that.

Have you got InDesign?

In Photoshop you could select the text then use the scrubby sliders for scaling or tracking in the Character Palette to minimise the stretching.
