Thanks Mylenium. I'm not home this week so I'll have to wait until Friday I think before I can try anything else, but I'll follow up. I have also logged the problem with Adobe Support and I'm waiting to hear from them.

Please define the "or" in your "and/or" statements. Are you saying there a
way to make the PDF file open-able, but NOT printable or editable (copying
images or text)?

How? Seems to me the password would prevent all -- not just some -- of these
actions. If you can't open it, you surely can't print or edit it. But the
way you phrased this hints that there's a way to open it but not print or
edit it.

I want people to see it. Just not save / print / edit (copy from) it. If
they can save it anyway, I'd still like to know how to prevent the other
two. But it has to be at least viewable.

Briefly, yes, with the usual caveats that screen shots can copy text to
a raster image, and of course copy illustrations (limited to the
resolution of the screen presentation.) To some persons that is adequate
protection.

I will clarify further. Using Acrobat you can put a password on a file
so that it cannot be opened (by the average user) without the password.
That means the file can be saved but not read (therefore contents cannot
copied by any means.) That is a rather useless feature for the Web
presentation because it will not present.

IN ADDITIONl TO, OR you can place a password on it to control
permissions. By this I mean that you can make the document unprintable,
and/or unavailable to selecting type or illustrations. But it can be
read and saved without the password.

I believe the second option above is what you want.

After (or if) a person provides the second password, then he can allow
printing, and/or copying of text or illustrations.

I do not know if Adobe offers a trial version of Acrobat, but if you can
get it then look to the menu item, "Advanced" -> "Security" -> "Show
Security Properties" and then trigger password option.

Keep in mind that the second option is mainly intended not to keep the
document from being read, copied (in parts) by screen captures, or
saved, but to control COLLABORATION - unauthorized/authorized
modification of the original document as it passes between persons for
mark-up and approvals. Adobe offers a security server to help manage
collaboration security using security templates, certificates and other
devices. It is powerful but not within the scope of web serving to the
public which is what you wanted.

I hope this helps.

Clarifying again - two passwords are not necessary. What I should have
written is "provides a password to the second option".

I should mention that the file I'm getting from my client has type
layers, and I want to make sure these remain editable. I see that
"Maximize Compatibility" saves a flattened version of the file, and I
don't know if this means that the resulting file contains only a
flattened version of the document, or if the resulting file contains a
flattened version and an unflattened version of the document. If it does
contain two versions, will CS2 be able to open the unflattened version?

Maybe I want to be asking for a Photoshop PDF (PDP) file?

Evan,

Deal with the font problems. Converting fonts to vector shapes does
increase the amount of data. While small amounts of text can be converted
to shapes with little increase in file size, paragraphs of text converted to
shapes can bloat the file size quickly.

A vector shape is a description of nodes, connecting lines, and fill areas.
Round elements, common to letters, contain large numbers of nodes with short
lines between them. Fonts include all the vector descriptions of each
letter; the file only needs to contain the specific character and the font
in which it should be rendered. Converting text to shapes means the full
vector descriptions of each individual shape must be saved within the file.

Hi resolution TIFF is usually acceptable for most applications, however, for
the most crisp lettering and scalability, EPS is a fine format (careful:
some versions of PS output EPS as full raster images). Software for layout,
such as InDesign, preserves the crisp scalable vector based fonts and
handles overprinting for the best of both raster and vector elements. Just
make sure to share the font files you used with your printer for
compatiblity.

From: Pickman@adobeforums.com

Hi all,

just installed my Production Suite Premium on the following System (fresh install, clean System, no other versions of Photoshop):

Intel E8500 Dualcore
Nvidia Geforce 9800 GX2 (Driver Version 178.24)
3 GB RAM
Windows XP Professionel SP3

Photoshop has it's own Scratchdisk assigned with at least 50 GB free Space.

I know that the 9800 GX2 is considered to be a "Gaming-Card" but as a freelance artist i work für the game-industry on many occasions and i need a decent gaming hardware to test what i am working on. As far as i know, the card meets all requirements for CS4 and Nvidia tells me, that their GPU's are perfect for CS4. (wasn't a problem with any version before, i use Photoshop AND Nvidia-Cards since Photoshop 4)

Here are the things that bug me:

- Photoshop disables the OpenGL Features on random occasions, stating, that it has encountered a problem. This happens either in Two GPU-Mode or One-GPU-Mode.

There's no obvious reason for any errormessage, because IF Open GL is activated it seems to work pretty good, zooming and rotating works quite well and fast. I notced, that the deactivating of the OpenGl Features happens either after saving my file or when i open photoshop.

- Photoshop crashed on several occasions mostly concerning heavy transforming of multiple layers. It simply didn't respond anymore in the midst of the transormation-process.

My guess is, that this is also linked to the GPU/Driver. System-Memory is checked, GPU works like a charm in all other applications. CS3 has not once crashed in one year, so i guess it has to do with the changes made in CS4.

Strange thing is, that even with open GL deactivated, the above written problems occur. I would have thought, that with OpenGl dectivated, Photoshop would somehow become kind of CS3 again, but it seems, there had been to much changes to simply disconnect photoshop from it's new OpenGL interface.

Apart from these two Problems, Photoshop CS4 is doing ok. It feels kind of sluggish compared to older versions, but that might also change with some new drivers.

Sad thing is, that the rotate canvas feature and the extended moverange for images, the main reasons why i upgraded to CS4, are only working with
OpenGL activated. I really hope there will be a fix in the near future.

There are other questions concerning PS CS4's usability:

- The Scale-Brush Feature uses alt + right mouse buttons, what seems kind of strange when using a stylus (Even more when using a stylus without buttons like the wacom layout-marker).

I would prefer a comination of keyboard shortcuts plus stylus movement ctrl + alt for example. so far i have not found a way to remap the keys. Am i missing something? Or is this impossible?

- Is there a way to get window behaviour back the way it was in CS3? The new way of handling windows is ok, but i liked the old one better. If i disable "floating windows docking" there's no way to maximize a window INSIDE the photoshop workspace. The maximize button on top of every window is right now completely useless because it maximizes the window AND gets rid of all the menus and palettes. I don't see why i want to do that.

That's it. I hope this is useful either for the guys at adobe or for other users. Every new Photoshop-Version has had its problems, i hope that these will just be dealt with like the ones before.

All the best,

Pickman

Hi Everyone,

Problem Solved Yeah!!!

~~~~ Problem: Adobe CS3 Master Collection Installs, but the applications don't run, but are running in a process, or displays and hangs and does not allow for Activation. ~~~~
This has been an issue for me with my dual Quad Core Xeon system for over a year. I believe that it has to do with RAID configurations and an improper pointer to the operating system for activation. I am using Vista 32 with SP1. The majority of Adobe support took me through literally weeks of pain. Unfortunately, I did not talk to Sarah!!!!
The above works and is posted again below!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1) Go to administrative tools within the control panel and go to Services. Within Services find FLEXnet Licensing Service and start it, if it is not already started.
2) Go here:
<http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb401528>
Install the patch (I know it says it's for Reader and for Vista only but this is false. It works for many apps within the Adobe suite and is compatible with XP). If you press CTRL+ALT+DEL and go to the Processes tab you should see that FNPLicensingService.exe is now running.
3) Start up any application other than Adobe Acrobat. You should be prompted with an activation screen. Enter your serial and activate the package online. CS3 should now be functinal.
THANK YOU AGAIN "SARAH AT ADOBE" FOR ACTUALLY CARING AND YOUR KNOWLEDGE THAT GAVE YOU THE ABILITY TO ACTUALLY HELP. I WISH I COULD THANK YOU PERSONALLY. I HAVE SPENT LITERALLY OVER 90 HOURS WITH OVER 15 CALLS TO ADOBE WITH NO RESULTS.
How did the old plug-in get to the CS4 goodies. Did you copy it from CS3?
Well, son of a gun. I thought I got it off the Goodies folder on one of the CS4 DVDs. The readme file on the DVD says it's there, and there's a download link for "Legacy Optional Plug-ins." But I just remembered that, when I downloaded that, the plug-in wasn't there, either. So I did copy the JPEG2000 version from CS3.
A calibrated monitor is not going to help with the mess he was getting. If
you can open the source images and they look fine then Photomerge is doing
something nasty to get the mess he got. I have had issues with raw files and
Photomerge myself where something have gotten mangaled. The solution for me
is to not use raw files but to use JPG or TIFF images. Though Adobe does
need to look a this and fix it.
I think part of the problem is that at least for me ACR doesn't come up and
allow you to process the raw files before Photomerge gets them. This means
that some default or something in the processing of the raw data to bitmap
for Photomerge has an issue.
I have installed Photoshop CS3 Extended on my PC (Pentium 4, 3 Ghz, 1GB RAM). The program loads fine and I can use the adjustments (levels, hue, filters, etc). When I attempt to use the Clone stamp tool, It does not work. If I push the "Alt" key and click the mouse, I get the cross-hairs like you are supposed to, but when I release the "Alt" key, it does not clone anything. The circle and the + signs follow the mouse, but no cloning is done. Also, with the Healing brush, it goes thru the motions (round paint brush), but does not leave the dark trace when the mouse is clicked and held. So when released, no healing is done. I have Photoshop Elements 6.0 on the same computer and it works properly. I have tried un-installing/re-installing; deactivate and repair, all with no luck.
just some general observations...
check that you are cloning both from and to the layers/areas you're expecting if you're working with a multi-layer document. check the options bar to see if 'use all layers' is selected, if that's what you want. also make sure that if you have a selection, you're not trying to clone outside of that selection.
usually when this happens to me, i've forgotten about a selection somewhere. try hitting ctrl-d (deselect) in case you have one hidden...
Easy answer: stop trying to put in a number less than -180 or greater than 180.
Ok, I found the answer, at least I suspect it's the answer.
I run Smart Sharp usually with some degree of Highlight fade. It is usually sitting between 50% and 80%, with some forays up to 100%. Last week, I sharpened a file that had no significant highlights, so I took the opportunity to move the slider to zero. That's what t did it.
Last night, I had to fade it again and there it was! Turns out that at any setting other than zero, the timing increases by an order of magnitude. At 100%, the timing for 90% of the time it takes to complete, then finishes.
100% is faster than at 50%, by about 10%.
Because I keep the slider at some Highlight fade as a matter of course, I didn't see that it was causing the delay. What I see is that the Progress bar stops at about 1/3 of it's length. At zero, it does not stop.
Just opening the Smart Sharp with the slider non-zero adds a huge amount to the Scratch disk. With the slider at zero, Scratch does not increase.
