Na, this is unrelated to the select or crop tools and has always been this way. Any floating layer will be resized with sampling, meaning that its edges will be antialiased. This is not immediately apparent in PS when cropping the layers to that size, but causes the problem when saving for web. Hence the logical workflow must be to fill those layers after the transform, use Solid Fill adjustment layers or, if possible, even merge down such layers to the background.

Why not create your styled text on a transparent layer, then save as a PNG24?
No filled rectangle to deal with—just your text and fully alpha-channeled transparency. It'll work over any background color you choose for your webpage.

One thing I've noticed, which I've never seen written, is that when you resize a layer it anti-aliases the edge. If I want to resize a finished image, I flatten it first, then resize. For some reason a flattened image keeps a sharp edge, whereas one in layers does not.

I'm not clear as to what you are saying. If the screen has artifacts, then it's most likely an issue with the browser not refreshing the drawing or, on the other hand, possibly wrong framerate/ jiffies settings in the file. Other issues could include pixels near the edges that do not fall within the color palette, thus giving away the nature of the image... Could you provide a link to the file for review?

Well, but are you a student in the sense of being entitled based on Adobe's terms and conditions? If so, the question should answer itself. In that case it wouldn't even matter, if you own a previous version...

I'm thinking about the getting the Intel 80gb MLC ssd drive for primary use as a scratch disk...I may get a SLC if I can justify the price...
Has anyone tried SSD's as a scratch disk. Any 'real world' experiences out there?
Cheers.

It's been tried, but the results haven't been good enough to justify the cost, at least that's my interpretation. Sorry I can't point you to a review. My feeling is that we'll need to wait for the next generation, but I hope I'm wrong. I want one too. :)

The price would be worth it if they really out performed mechanical HDs....I might hold on a bit.

Ian,
Are the files you resave on a local drive? Do they accidently have the R/O flag set?
I only get what you describe when I open a file that comes off a CD or DVD, and then try to resave it.

Adobe thinks the variations command is in PS CS4, too, so I would assume it should be. Don't know why it wouldn't be in yours.

Robert Tansky:I deleted the preferences file in the appdata roaming adobe
folder but it's still not there, is there a different way to reset preferences?
It is in the FAQ:
<http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?14@@.ee747eb>
but to reset the settings file you press Cntl-Shift-Alt keys immediately after double clicking on the Photoshop CS4 icon to start the program. You should get a dialog box asking if you wish to delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings File.
However, to use Variations you need to be in 8-bit color mode and can't be in Lab or Indexed Color mode. If it is missing it could be because the plug-in wasn't installed for some reason. In the x64 bit version under Vista x64 it should be in the folder C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4 (64 Bit)\Locales\en_US\Additional Plug-Ins\Win\Filters. The 32-bit version should be here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Locales\en_US\Additional Plug-Ins\Win\Filters.

It seems really strange that Nik would leave much behind after uninstalling, or that some stray Nik reg entry would affect PS behavior. The only thing I can think of is if you somehow got the auto loading of the plugin stuck on after uninstalling.
I've been using them for years and always install all my 3rd party plugins to a separate folder for times of upgrading and/or troubleshooting.

If that command isn't there (it might be grayed out for a couple of
minutes when starting) then it's pretty safe to assume someone has sold
you a pirated copy. It's most likely a volume license that someone stole
from work.
What other nasty little things they've added to it I couldn't tell you.

Who could change their mind? If Adobe told me it IS legit, how could they
change their mind? They could just yank the number back?
Yep. Perhaps the number is a new pirate one. You are using it, and suddenly 3000 other people start using it. Well, Adobe will add it to the list of pirate numbers and you are out of luck.

Hello again...
Was attempting to clean up a photo enlargement last nite utilizing 'Unsharp Mask'...inadvertantly changed the 'Threshold' setting in the dialog window...& failed to notice what this setting was previously engaged at.
[this happens to me every so often, aamof.]
so...I'm using Photoshop CS3. What is the default number for this setting ???
(or...perhaps more importantly...how does one return *all* such dialog settings in Photoshop back to factory default ???)
Thanks very much,
Mark Forman

Deleting the preferences file (see the FAQ for how).
I don't think I have changed mine, and it is set at Amount 50, Radius 1.0, Threshold 0
