Hello, I was wondering if you could help me :)

I recently installed Photoshop CS4 extended, and I'm having some problems with Preferences in the edit menu.
When I attempt to go to either "performance" or "general" under preferences, it freezes, then I get an error report and it shuts down.
Everything else has been working fine so far, though, and it's a wonderful program.
My computer is a little older, and is on xp.
Thank you in advanced!

press Ctrl+Alt+Shift immediately after starting Photoshop, if done right, you'll get a dialog box asking you to delete the settings file. Click yes and see if that fixes your problem

I have noticed similar behavior in one of my Vista installations if the
scratch disc is not set to the c drive where the program is installed. Why
this occurs in some computer configurations and not others relates to
inherent instabilities in Bridge that Adobe has never corrected in both CS3
and CS4.
As long as you have room on your C drive there is little functional
difference in putting the scratch drive elsewhere anyway.
First, hold down all three Ctrl+Alt+Shift buttons
Now "while keeping those button held," simply open Photoshop or a file that
opens with Photoshop
As Photoshop loads, you should get a prompt asking if you would like to
"delete the Photoshop settings file", Click yes.
The preferences should all be back at their default settings: see it that
clears your problem.

Nothing is coming up when I tried that.
I've tried reinstalling completely as well...

The worst I can see is the old Quark system, where each upgrade costs what it would have cost to do continual upgrades.

As long as they keep the educational versions cheap, I am covered though. Right now I can buy a new ed version for about the same as an upgrade.

That's how AutoCAD upgrades work, plus they come every 12 months and they're
600 bucks, so subscription winds up being cheaper. After 3 missed upgrades
you pay full price (4 grand) unless you can beg them to get 'legacy'
pricing - 30% off and a mandatory subscription.

Bottom line - if that setting made a difference: your display profiles are broken. Check for updates to the software that made your display profiles.

in the layer palette at bottom >>>click the little "fx" for effects palette

select blending mode
there is a drop down with choices that governs how the effects layers will
be applied when blended
( in your case it should already say dissolve)
under that is some check boxes
tick off >>>>>blend interior effects as a group

OR
an easy work around

select all> edit>copy merged
file > new>paste
save that image as the final

I had this issue in CS3 too, but it still seems to be an issue in CS4. Sometimes the leading sets itself to some number (right now its at 200), and it just wont go back to 'auto'. I even deleted the text box and set the leading on a new one before typing anything in. As soon as the text goes to the next line the leading just sets itself back to 200. Anyone experience this before or have any advice?

Thanks for the advice. It's a Gigabyte card which I eventually persuaded to install itself by going for the nuclear option - reformat and OS reinstall etc. I've never had ATI driver problems before.

I have been using this combination successfully for over a month when it changed. I tried to open CS4 normally and got the error message "Could not open a scratch file because the file is locked. Use the Properties command in the Windows explorer to unlock the file". This error message is then followed by : "could not initialize Photoshop because the file is locked. Use the Properties command in the Windows explorer to unlock the file".

So I can't open Photoshop - I have no idea what to do apart from feel very frustrated - please, please help.

Hi

is there a snap to option in cs4 for the crop tool?

I'm restoring some ole photos and need to trim a small amount around the edges. However whenever I get close to the edge when dragging it seems to snap to the edge

thanks

Ian

Holding down the Ctrl key in these situations will temporarily suspend the snap functionality as well.

hey guys... i wanted to say thanks for the all of the suggestions. the info i lead off this post with was a bit incorrect.

have 2 files for the flier, page 1 and page 2. each file is roughly 55mb in size. i played around a bit this morning with trying to get the file exported pdf file size down to a reasonable level and still some integrity to the overall look.

ended up printing to pdf and saving the file that way. the end result of the file size for both was 1.5mb. the viewable pdf as well as the printed pdf was suitable for my boss, although i would have rather had no compression with high quality output.

think i'll take mr. levine's advice and go with publisher next month.

thanks again.

That was NOT my advice. My advice was to use InDesign. I simply said
you'd be better off with Publisher but that just a pick your poison kind
of thing.
