What I do is to keep a master file with alpha channels. This I never touch. Permanent modifications to the master file are stored as layers or adjustment layers on top of the original.

Then I make copies for specific output purposes, using the alpha channels to make the necessary modifications for that particular output.

The point I was trying to make was merely that an alpha channel can be made in a number of different ways, depending on the circumstances, even by erasing. But of course that's always on a duplicate layer, and I think that's what Buko meant also.

The great thing about alpha channels is flexibility. It can be loaded as a straight selection, but also into a layer mask. But on the whole I find alpha channels easier to edit than layer masks. I use layer masks mostly to "paint in" or "paint out" an effect.

Oh, and for the sake of completeness: If the original is a raw file, it goes in there as a Smart Object to keep ACR editability.

I tried to make "Change Layer Content" panel by Adobe configurator
<http://www.qtweb.com/photoshop/changelayer.jpg>

Extract and put this folder into the Photoshop Folder>Plug-ins>Panels.
then Startup PS CS4.
You can open this panel from menu "Windows>Extentons>Change Layer"

I have photoshop CS3 working on Windows Vista Premium.
I was going to ask if it would work with Windows XP.
I don't need to now!
Thanks Mike.

I am still waiting for replacement RAM. I had things working fine for a while and then I wanted to calibrate with the Eye One Match. I first wanted to make sure I had the latest NVidia drivers and downloaded the file. When I was going to install it, the message was that is was already there and should I overwrite. To be sure, I thought and chose Yes.

Ont the next reboot I couldn't get beyond the motherboard screen, not even into Bios. ASUS said that it appeared I needed a new Bios chip and should get one or return the computer. After a long weekend I called NVIDIA and they said to remove the graphics card and put it back in the same slot. At first I thought this didn't work, as the primary monitor was blank. but I could hear a lot of activity on the computer and found out that the desktop was moved to the secondary monitor that wasn't on. The wireless keyboard and mouse didn't work, and I had to go through more boots with wired, resetting the display and such to get things back to normai.

After a couple of days of normalcy, I had a repeat of the motherboard pnly screen after installing the Intuos tablet drivers. This time I just reconnected the main monitor alone and didn't have the other problems.

the system seems very temperamental. It was awful having to go back to my XP machine over the weekend though, as the slowness of every operation with CS3 and Bridge was almost unbearable after running on the Vista machine where everything was happening in a few seconds.

Dave, you're very harsh. It was just a courtesy posting. It may be of some little comfort to know that Mac users are experiencing problems too, and that us PC users have not been, intentionally or unintentionally, singled out. There may be some issues in common, so it's nice to know. You shouldn't jump on people just because they use Macs and dare to venture onto this particular forum. Who says we shouldn't be allowed to talk to each other?

Photoshop CS4 does cause crashes in Windows too. I could go on, but I see that this is not actually the subject of this particular thread. :-)

One possible cause of CS3 crashes is documented here:

Basil

Since when are you the forum cop?

Dave gave a harmless tip to the guy. He wasn't harsh and he didn't jump on him.

If you been here as long as Dave and given one hundredth of the tips and advice he has over the years, you might be in a position to criticise.

We get lost souls in here all the time.

hello everybody,

disabling "Open documents as tabs." works well if you try to open documents using File > Open..., but if you drag and drop documents to Ps (which is what I usually do) they are opened in tabs regardless of this setting in prefs.
is there an option/hack that corrects this as well?

I tried to limit the stroke size at 0.5px, but the min px is 1px. I afraid it is the limitation of PS7.

Hi Bart Cross, how could i get the real bold font? Mind to elaborate more? Thanks..

Depending on what font you use, you may wish to follow procedures and purchase a different font weight. Most professional fonts come as entire families and provide options from light to heavy... Since you will only need one weight, I'm sure you could afford spending those 20 or 40 bucks... Likewise, you can almost always find a font similar to your current one as a replacement.

Hi there,
I have a problem here and do not know how to fix it.
I imported a model and started altering the textures. I created textures added layers details and realized at a point that I need to modify my uv coordinates.
So back in my 3d application I did the changes and exported the 3ds file again.
Now here is my question. How can I import the updated mesh to my current psd and "tell" it to use the textures I modified before?

Not that I'm aware of, unfortunately. After the initial import, PS looses all relation to the source file and stores everything internally....

We have a similar issue :
Last week (20. Novemebr 2008) we upgraded Windows to SP3.
Now Photomerge in Photoshop doesn't work properly. When merging pictures it seems to work, but then instead to show the panorama picture it shows the last picture and a message appears like follows :

"Einige Bilder konnten nicht automatisch ausgerichtet werden"
(Some pictures couldn't be adjusted automatically)

- I reduced the size of the pictures, no change in the result.
- After several times to try the merging again we were getting the same results,
- Sometimes even CS3 crashed itself without any message.
- We were using all options of merging (zyl, prop. etc.) always gettimg the same result.
We were using CS3 since a year and before CS2 since 2006, never having anny difficulties with Photomerge.

Hi there again,

have a huge problem concerning Photoshop CS4. As I stated in another thread, the script "layer comps to files" is not working.

I have to extract 25 layer comps to individual files for a storyboard-project but right now, it simply produces an error message:

Error 1: Unable to create Window - OS error (1400) Line: 234 -> dlgMain = new Window("dialog", strTitle);

Is there any way to fix this?

Yesterday i got it working once, but today the error message is the only thing i get.

Any help is appreciated.

Mostly you should not repost to a new thread when you have the same problem in a different thread. It just means you have to look two places to get help, and the people who might help you will be asking you questions that were already asked in the other one (which makes us cranky).
