And the more nearly vertical that bullet is fired into the air, the more
nearly that terminal velocity will approach the muzzle velocity.

He can still get any gun for self defence. Nothing has changed. The ONLY

The lack of street crime involving guns in the UK seems to indicate that
this is not the case.

And the Canon A590 has it "out of the box" if they do.

I have both the Pentax K10D (well actually I have the
rebadged samsung version, but they are the same camera), and
the Canon 450D. If I was to nitpick, I'd say the photos from
the Canon are slightly better out of the camera, but there's
not much in it. I think the main difference is that the
Pentax produces slightly softer JPGs.

The big difference to me is in the operation. Everything
about the Pentax just works for me - the position of the
dials is in the right place, the buttons are in the right
place, you can configure what function is assigned to each
dial etc. Actually one of the key reasons I got the 450D
instead of the 40D was because I absolutely despise the
dial/button layout of the higher end Canons.

As I said, the AF speed on the Canon is probably technically
faster, but the Pentax feels just as fast, and in lower
light the Pentax will still lock focus where the Canon will
give up - eg with an 18/3.5 lens the Pentax can reliably
focus on stars, the Canon just hunts and gives up.

Build quality is another area where the Pentax excels, it
feels solid in your hand, whereas the Canon feels light and
cheap. The Pentax lenses, even the kit lens, feel well made
and solid.

I did not examine the sculpture closely enough.
I thought that the older person was a male, and as such, the position
was suggestive. But as so many pointed out, the older person is
obviously a female.
So the sculpture does not appear to me tosmack of pedophilia.

Unless of course the older person is a male cross dresser or a
shemale.

Have any of you pornography experts checked out any of the major
public art galleries? They've got filthy pictures and statues in there
which make this one look like two kids at a drinking fountain!

TOPIC: Canon A590 - quality a disappointment - lemon, or typical?

Given that my (fairly beloved) Canon a630 had acquired some dirt inside its lens (no, I don't know how). I purchased a a590, and used it to take some holiday shots.

I was pretty disappointed.

This morning I took the same test shot, in the same circumstances, with both my a630 and a590.

Here is a zoom down, and a 100% crop from both images; both are saved at 95% quality in Gimp, and the zoom down was bicubic.

whole frame, a630:

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f234/bugbear33/photo_tech/6302.jpg

100% Crop, a630:

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f234/bugbear33/photo_tech/6302crop.jpg

whole frame, a590:

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f234/bugbear33/photo_tech/5902.jpg

100% Crop, a590:

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f234/bugbear33/photo_tech/5902crop.jpg

Now, I can't quite put a technical description to what's happened, but at the observational level, the a590 shots are
a good deal softer, verging on blurred, and the colours (especially in the roof tiles in the 100% crop) are less well shown.

My particular a590 is clearly less good than my particular a630. What I need to know is:

Do I have a duff a590 (which needs returning to the retailer), or is my a630 an unfair basis for comparison?

I don't have multiple spare a590s for comparison - but I'm hoping denizens here can help me out.

Comments keenly appreciated (except the ones "saying get a DSLR")

I have two cameras with the same kind of differences between their
out-of-the-box ex-camera jpegs as that. Some minor adjustment to the
jpeg mode parameters in the apparently worse camera (vividness,
sharpness, etc.) makes it apparently the better camera.

I note your use of the word "apparently"; I would (genuinely)
welcome any advice on working out if I have an "actual"
problem, as opposed to an apparent one.

Certainly, in regard to my (irreplacable) holiday
photos, I am already experimenting with increasing saturation,
altering the exposure curves (even using enfuse to blend multiple
exposure mapped photos), and post sharpening.

But I don't want to HAVE to do this (especially
on 600 photos!)

The case was thrown out:
http://www.amateurphotographer.co.uk/news/Greek_photographer_Tube_photo_case_thrown_out_news_282766.html

But a disturbing link at the bottom of that article mention some
Austrian photographers being forced to delete all their photos, and
another that London Underground may now require amateur photographers
to buy permits when previously this applied only to professionals.

Yes, thanks.

I sometimes wonder how I would deal with police, who perhaps have strong

The editorial in Amateur Photographer for May 16th.
Maybe condemn is too strong, but it's been clear for too long that the
3:2 or APS-C format (and the so-called, "full frame" 35mm format) is
too wide. The 4/3rd ratio is more logical and results in far fewer
instances of cropping an image. What good are 12-24 megapixels if you
have to hack away 1/4 of them most of the time?

Rich,

The format needs to fit the image, so it will (in theory) be different for
every photo taken, so you will always be cropping and loosing pixels.
With displays now moving to 16:9 for TV, I would have said that 3:2 was
too narrow, not too wide!

A format I've never used is the 2 1/4 inch square format (or any square
format). Resolves the age-old problem as to whether landscape or portrait
fits best, and arguable makes the best use of the lens.

On the contrary 3:2 often isn't wide enough, it depends on the individual
photograph. I crop most of my photos to 3:2, and many, especially
landscapes, to 16:9.

The boring, nearly square, 4:3 format is *so* yesterday (yawn).

What shape are modern TVs, 4:3, I think not. It's about time we ditched this
ancient format.

But that would take all the fun out of trolling!

I couldn't get the flour to work and it was very messy. It turns out
that there are better ways. Dry erase markers work very well. They can
be applied to the club face or the ball, but I found it worked better
on the club. Various types of tape also work pretty well. Duct tape
worked best for me.

I have a Sony Cypershot (DSC-W150).

Last weekend, we had a birthday party for my grandson. There was a lot
of fairly fast action, which I tried to capture. Most of the photos
were blurry, but the movies were pretty good.

Each movie shot produced two files, a large MPG file and a small THM
file.

Is there a good way to extract a single frame from the movie and make
it into a still photo? I would appreciate any tutoring on how to do
this.

Thanks
