I actually fixed my scanner. I sat there and watched the light scan with the lid open and I saw a little plastic piece sticking up causing the light not to be even across the scanning mechanism. SO, I took it apart, got a tad of super glue and success!

Just thought I would report. :)

BTW, there is just about every kind of user group on Yahoo and I happen to find an Epson 3200 group that just happen to have a file on how to take this thing apart. It was very simple. 2 screws.

Thanks Linda. I'm pretty jazzed myself. It is amazing to me the poor workmanship in these things. I really had nothing to lose. It was either the trash or shell out another chunk of change for something I don't use much anymore.

Cindy, I hear you on not wanting to spend the money, especially on a scanner since I'm sure you have very limited use for one. It's a great feeling when you can do this stuff yourself. Having time to do it is another matter. I have a new hard drive sitting on my desk that needs to be installed before the time runs out to return it if it's bad. And one new one inside that has failed, and is too late to return. :-(

I will bet you are.

Well see, it had a rattle. Rattles drive me crazy even if nothing is wrong. I paced for 3 days listening to it until I could stand it no longer. So I took the back off. I honed in on that baby in less than 10 seconds. Turns out the compressor is sitting on 4 bolts. There is a rubber cushion, a flat washer and then a very large cotter pin on each bolt. The cotter pin was rattling against the washer on one of the posts. So, I popped out the cotter pin, put a piece of rubber with a hole in it over the washer and put the cotter pin back. It is quiet as a mouse.

I didn't want to call for service (it is new) since it never rattled before noon (yeah, it's true). I couldn't count on when they would come. I figured some kind of expansion and contraction due to weather accounted for that.

And THAT is my story about scanners (not to lose site of the topic).

I have never been so frustrated. After calls to Apple, downloading the latest drivers (they were already installed on the iMac 10.5.6) searching every resource I could find online, I am still unable to find out how to get a paper choice (specifically photo paper) when attempting to print from Photoshop on the iMac. There appears to be a choice for everything else except paper.
PLEASE oh please can someone put me out of my misery and tell me how to rectify this situation? I really need to print from Photoshop and on miscellaneous media, where did that option go?

Had to say as you have not told us what printer you use.

Yes, the printer brand is essential information. There's a known defect with the HP driver where paper choices will simply be greyed out when printing from Photoshop, while they're available in every other app.

Neither HP nor Adobe has even tried to explain this.

Look at this nonsense:

OK! Relax.
First does your Mac recognize your printer?
If yes, in CS4 go to File/Page Setup to get the Page Setup window.
Here you should see the usual Settings: Format for: Paper Size:
Orientation: & Scale: selections.
In the Format for window find your printer and click on OK.

If you do not find your printer and have the latest drivers installed,
go tho your Mac System preferences and select Print & Fax. Make sure
your printer is in the list of printers in the window on the left. If
not use the + at the bottom of that window to add your printer.
Clicking on that + will start a search for printers and associated
drivers.
Once that is done, close System Preferences.

Repeat the Page Setup procedure. and print a test in CS4 the full print
dialog should open. Again click on the print button or enter. The Mac
print dialog will open. If it is in the short format you will see 2
selection pull down windows Printer: (Your printer should be IDed here)
& Presets: (normally set to Standard).
On the right next to the Printer: pull down window there will be an
Aqua selection button, click on this. The Print dialog will expand to
add Copies: Pages: & a selection Button allowing you to choose Layout:
Color Matching: Paper Handling: Cover Page: Scheduler: Quality & Media
(here is where you select your Media Type/paper & Print Mode,
top-quality photo for example)
The others will be Color Options: Special Effects: Borderless Printing
& Summary

If you do not find your printer listed, either install from your
supplied printer SW support CD/DVD or go to your printer manufacturer's
web site and download and install the latest drivers and repeat the
above.

Good luck, I hope that works for you.

I have no idea how I happened to stumble across this discussion. Clearly, I did.

I just captured a portion of the screen using 'CMD+SHIFT+4' and then opened the PNG file in Photoshop. The file had an embedded profile: my monitor profile.

Leopard (10.5.6)

Unlike Safari, if you move a file that is being downloaded to a folder from the desktop, you get a warning that the file is in use. If you click continue, the download manager will show that download completes.
The file itself will not open, an error message says the file is in use. The icon for the file is a generic download icon. I'm not sure I'm going to email Field Marshal Clauss about this, I might end up in Auschwitz.
Safari doesn't care what you do.
I'm trying OmniWeb, but it's not fast.

OK, My MacPro has a ATI Radeon HD 2600 (256MB). I have 8GB of RAM. It seems fine. But with CS4, I get some not-to-annoying anomalies such as the screen pulsating when running a selection and using Healing Brush. According to the support site here, I should turn off Enable GPU Drawing in Preferences. So I'm hoping that might help.

I'm wondering if I buy a nVidia 7900 GTX (512 MB), if it might make any difference—in general. I am really not to clear on what fancier video cards will do for my photoshop work. So maybe I need some help on that too.

What difference, if any, will getting this seemingly better video card do for Photoshop.

Thanks

First time poster here. I see from posts I've been reading here that many of you are experienced Photoshop users. I hope you can share some advices on best books or videos to help me learn Photoshop.

What do you suggest?

Hello,

I'm new on these forums. I've read through some of the posts here but am unsure as to what would be right for me.

I have no photoshop CS4 experience and it looks daunting! I am looking for video tutorial (preferable) or a book that will take me through all the basics and some more practical examples too.

What do the experts recommend?

TIA

Karl

ps1 - read that again:

"8-core: Eight memory slots (four per processor) supporting up to 32GB of main memory using 1GB, 2GB, or 4GB DIMMs"

The quad-core yes, upto 8GB.

Neil - Yes the shorter time, 3 years, for the leasing is better. That's why we changed it. Someone thought it out wrong (it was cheaper they thought, not taking repairs into the calculation) the previous time when making it five years. What we have been seeing for quite some time with the hard-used G5s is that they are really run down and one after the other just dying on us. Not to mention limitations of harddiskspace etc.
