That's what I meant.

Anyway, CS4 is a pretty demanding piece of software to be running on a notebook. Only the latest and greatest (and pricy) ones will run this type of software as smoothly as a desktop.

Also, 64-bit software is pretty much overkill for notebooks right now. A lot of your 2GB RAM is eaten by your OS alone which doesn't leave much for apps like PS. If you can, get another 2GB for your notebook. That should help some. Also, make sure you have plenty of disk space available for scratch and, if possible, get hard drives at 7200 RPM or better.

Also check the notebook power settings to make sure they aren't hindering it's performance. And the usual preferences within PS itself.

As far as notebooks go, yours is pretty good. The 64-bit OS was probably unnecessary, though, unless you needed it for other apps.

Hi,
you have this problem when you open more files? I get a warning message when I open more then 10 files that opengl is for all files above 10 is disabled until the number of open files is 10 or less.

I'm having trouble with the "load files into stack" script. If I have the images open it works. If I browse to the images it appears to be loading the files but only results in one layer.

2.6 core duo, 4 gigs ram, XP Home, 60 gig scratch.

My company is switching to a Windows HPC 2008 Server based platform and I wanted to know if we'll be able to run Photoshop CS4 Extended on this OS? The Microsoft site seems a bit sparse in terms of information on compatibility with existing applications.

find and remove it from startup folder or the run reg keys where it's loading from ... or reinstall.

what os are you running?

I don't know if it's strictly necessary. what the heck does it do anyway. i really don't like all these processes that feel they have to start up when my system does. seems like a very slippery slope to a poorly performing machine.

There seems to be an issue with either JPEG decoding in Photoshop or the blend modes don't work as they should. Or maybe someone finds the true reason ... ?

Let's go step-by-step:

This is the original image file (JPEG):

I examined the differences. Open one image and add the second image as a new layer over it with blend mode = difference. Use magic wand tool, with tolerance=zero. Expected results: entirely black image, entire image selected. Actual esults (white filled selection):

Merge both layers, invert the colors and you see the differences between the images. I applied a curves adjustment to exaggerate the differences:

Again, this time you should see an entirely white image, if both images were identical.

The JPEG-to-PNG conversion was done with a third party image viewer that I trust. Obviously, the possibility exists, that this conversion is not exact/losless. But I can refute this, as I converted both the source JPEG image and the converted PNG image to BMP images, and the two files that were obtained this way were bit-for-bit identical:

So it's impossible that any loss occured, given that in the a losless reconstruction was possible.

Thus the error must be somewhere within Photoshop.

The two PNG files (fotolq4 and convertedxxx1) you posted are the same. Both are different from the JPG (fotoqb2). You state that you created the PNG files from the JPG file, but since you created them with another converter, I'm going to ask why you wouldn't suspect the third party converter. A quick conversion in PS reveals the files stay the same. I'd trust PS.

The way I read your post, you start with PS JPG (a). You convert from this point forward without PS in all instances. Convert JPG to PNG with software x and get (a) to (b). Convert JPG to PNG to BMP in software x and get (a) to (b) to (a). Convert in software PS and what happens? (a) to (a) to (a) to (a), except where you re-compress using lossy compression? Not that this rules out PS at fault, but it does speak to a workaround. Or maybe it's a bug in CS4. What version are you using?

Mark, I really don't get what you are trying to say. The way I figure it, you are concerned about different tools producing different JPEG compression patterns in the file, which is perfectly normal. JPEG is based on a series of waveform transformations and some other hocuspocus and depending on what the developer considers his topmost priority, there's even room in the specs on the code end in terms of trading quality/ precision for speed/ performance. At least that's what my feeble mind understands. I could quite well imagine that this also somehow affects the reconstruction on file open, depending on how it's implemented.

I freelance for a newspaper and need to enter cutline info before I send image to them. I'm wanting to be able to print an individual photo with the IPTC info with the photo, especially the Description field so I can proof the info before I send, then keep the page in a file for reference. I have CS3 with Photoshop and Bridge and also have Lightroom 1.3. How can I do this?

Did you reset the prefs as per instructions found elsewhere on this forum? what is the source of the files you are trying to open. Your OLE DLL crashing would indicate that they are under control by another tool and the request to access them causes a conflict...

Yes, the 8600M GT series should work fine. It does at least on my MacBook Pro on Vista Ultimate even with older drivers.
