No matter how much RAM I add to a machine, the only setting in RAM allocation
I can use in Photoshop is limited to what Photoshop reports it can see,
and that is 3072 MB.

Although apps can only directly address ~3 GB RAM, Mac OS X works with the apps to effectively utilize much more than that. E.g. Adobe engineer Adam Jerugim in 2008 posted: "CS4 (running on OS 10.5.x) will take advantage of all the RAM you have in your system as long as VM OS buffering is active (up to 32GB - I haven't tested more than that)."

The ability under Mac OS X to access large amounts of inexpensive RAM is a big benefit to the tower configuration.

Allen,

Since I am planning on getting a new Mac I went looking on my PS CS4 CD and I didn't see any plug-in by that name. Is it something that is automatically installed on an Intel Mac?

And Chris Cox has said "All we've said we're doing is rewriting the UI code"

So can just writing the UI code make PSCS5 64bit?

Yes, the barrier to going 64 bit on Macintosh is Apple's deprecation of Carbon UI APIs and forcing applications to redo their UI code using Cocoa.

Obviously whatever they are doing CAN make CS5 run in a 64-bit environment or John Nack and others would not have stated publicly that "CS5 for Mac will be 64-bit"!

I would be surprised if you could stuff the Quad with 4 x 4 gig chips for an actual max of 16 GB. Apple did this before with low end G5 tower RAM as a way of allowing a lower entry price point without cannibalizing high end sales.

Yes, but that was ONLY because of less slots, not because the low-end couldn't accept larger capacity sticks than the high-end. All models of that generation can (still) only accept 1 gig sticks.

This is different.

Of course, it's possible that Apple has instilled something in the new Quad to prevent it from recognizing 4 gig sticks, but given the RAM is the same in all models with the same specs, that's not clear at this point. Time will tell.

Remember, according to Apple, my early 2008 Macbook can only accept up to 4 GB of RAM and yet, I can install 6 GB. <http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/5300DDR2S6GP/>

You might as well look for freeware image editors as Photoshop 3 was so feature deficient by the advent of OS9.

If you really want to run Photoshop, I'd look for a more recent release. The last version of Photoshop to work in SheepShaver (OS9.0.4) should be version 6 (I run 5.5 myself). Version 7 required OS9.1.

In addition to Photoshop, the following image editors work in SheepShaver (OS9.0.4):

* xRes 2
* Painter 3.1
* Corel Photo-Paint 8 LE

I think I picked up all of these for free on magazine coverdiscs. You might find them downloadable somewhere as well.

Keep files that contain photographic images and gradients in 16-bit for as long as possible; and save your layered Master files as 16-bit RGB.

There are a few filters which still only work in 8-bit and you might have to convert to 8-bits if you really need to use them. But examine the possibility of using them in a separate file with a Smart Object from your original image.

32-bit is for special purposes such as when using HDR.

jezzthisisfull, here's a passage from Photoshop CS4: The Missing Manual <http://books.google.com/books?id=f38qA2yg0PYC&pg=PA43&lpg=PA43&dq=how+many+colors+per+channel+32-bit&source=bl&ots=yk1MHp_lAt&sig=OPINN_prhJDcUNSypzOUh1AwxbA> that shed some light on this for me. Here's an explanation of bit depth <http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Photoshop/11.0/WSfd1234e1c4b69f30ea53e41001031ab64-73daa.html> on Adobe's site.

It's easy to get confused, especially with the mix of "bit" usage when it comes to 8-bit per channel vs. 16-bit per channel vs. a 24-bit image, etc.

Ann, could you explain "special purposes" 32-bit and HDR? I'm not familiar with it, so I'd appreciate it if you could explain it a bit further. I agree with you that staying in 16-bit as long as possible could be beneficial, especially when generated computer gradients where the transitions are much smoother. However, the concern is that when the image is converted to 32-bit ( CMYK ), or a typical 8-bit RGB, the additional bit information ( if any ) will get tossed, but will retain a smoother gradient than an original 8-bit counterpart. For instance, when someone saves their 16-bit ProPhoto RGB image ( a superwide gamut space ), then converts to 8-bit Adobe RGB, and then converts to SWOP CMYK, the additional gamut found in the ProPhoto RGB will be clipped or reduced down to the Adobe RGB gamut. But, even if you retain the 16-bit ProPhoto RGB and go straight to SWOP CMYK, the color will be clipped to fit inside the SWOP space. More color, more gamut? I'm not so sure.

Please, keep the bit counts as per-channel to reduce confusion.

32 bit should mean 32 bits per channel (integer or floating point), not 8 bit per channel times 4 channels, or 16 bit per channel times two channels.
There are 16 bit integers, and floating point formats -- not just 8 bit per channel times two channels, or 5 bits per channel times 3 channels plus a mask bit.
There are 24 bit floating point formats -- not just 8 bit per channel times 3 channels.
etc.

Referring to an image as 32 bit just allows for too many possible interpretations of the bits.
Say what you mean: 32 bit per channel, or 8 bit per channel CMYK, or 8 bit per channel RGBA, etc.

This a huge, complicated and confusing subject which cannot be explained in a few lines here:

Trying to take your questions one by one:

32-bit and HDR: This is a procedure where you can combine a number of digital photographs which were taken with differing exposures for the highlights and for the shadows and combine them into a single image in order to retain a wider dynamic range. (The results that I have seen from the use of this technique have mostly been somewhat bizarre and perfectly hideous!).

For instance, when someone saves their 16-bit ProPhoto RGB image ( a superwide
gamut space ), then converts to 8-bit Adobe RGB, and then converts to
SWOP CMYK, the additional gamut found in the ProPhoto RGB will be clipped
or reduced down to the Adobe RGB gamut.

We need to break that down a bit:

Saves their 16-bit ProPhoto RGB image ( a superwide gamut space ): Correct.

Then re-opens [or duplicates], the Saved 16-bit ProPhoto RGB image and
converts to 8-bit Adobe RGB:

That produces an RGB file which has been "clipped" to fit the smaller AdobeRGB space — but it is still a 16-bit file.

and then converts to SWOP CMYK:

Now you have CONVERTED your RGB colors to generate printing plates that will produce as close a replica as you can get to your Soft-preview of your (current) AdobeRGB image when printed on a Press which EXACTLY matches the conditions dictated by the CMYK Profile that you used.

But you still have a 16-bit per Channel file — UNTIL you change the Image mode to 8 Bits.

if you retain the 16-bit ProPhoto RGB and go straight to SWOP CMYK, the
color will be clipped to fit inside the SWOP space.

Not exactly: Your RGB image will be mapped to individual C, M, and Y Plates, and a Black plate will be generated (using the attributes of your specified CMYK Profile concerning GCR and Total Ink) in order to give you the best reproduction on Press (when real INK hits PAPER!) of your original RGB image.

But do read more on this subject because it is supremely important that you understand it fully.

I highly recommend Dan Margulis' "Professional Photoshop" for gaining a better understanding of this subject.

thanks, those links in particular were very helpful

"All tools in the toolbox, except the Art History Brush tool, can be used with 16‑bpc images."

actually it was the Art History Brush tool which led me to ask this question

since I am drawing 2D images and use liquify and other filters semi-frequently I think I'll just stick to 8 bit for now...maybe switch with CS 6 or 7 in the future...

Unless someone would suggest a better workflow? These are huge 4k images with 50+ layers and many smart objects...almost all drawn with brush tools.

So, sticking with 8 bits should be fine?

Thanks so much again...all replies were very helpful

The freeware program renamemaster.exe will do what you want. It's a

Amazon is good. And if you use their CC, you will either get extra time to
pay w/o finance charges and/or 3-5% back in coupons. Their return policy is
very favorable, as well.

Others that are positive B&H, Adaorama and KEH (Atlanta).

Ritz has filed for Chapter 11. That allows them to continue to do
business. It shouldn't really affect a would-be purchaser of a
camera. Any long term warranty is a warranty of the camera's US
distributor.

In most cases, if the supplier has the camera in stock, at a good
price, and ships it...the dealer's future has little bearing on the
purchase. Actually, this would be the time to look for good deals at
Ritz.

Amazon, their return policy is great, also a good place to
safely sell your used gear.

I have used B&H for a number of years. They will sell you the item at their
posted price with no hassle or requirement to also purchase some related
items at inflated prices or pay exhorbanate shipping and handling fees.
They have always shipped within the time the told me and I have received
everything in great shape.

I haven't used Amazon that much, only 4 times, but returns were
needed twice when suppliers substituted a cheaper item for the one
that was ordered. No change in price though. One was a B+W filter
that arrived as a Tiffen filter, with the glass filter element
rattling since it wasn't glued or crimped properly. I've ordered
more times from B&H and Adorama and never had a problem.

I bought my SLR from Amazon at a time when B&H was more expensive and
did not offer free shipping. Now B&H is usually the same price as Amazon
and offers free shipping, so I'd rather give the business to them. Help
them keep their brick and mortar store open so you can visit it when you
go to NYC!

One advantage of Amazon is that if you sign up for their credit card you
get a 3% rebate (in Amazon gift certificates) on Amazon purchases which
is better than any standard Visa card (I get 2% on one Visa card and
it's being discontinued at the end of March). So on the XSi kit, it'd be
$20.40 back in an Amazon gift certificate.

Or, are they doing the same thing and it's really 450k? In either event
that should be adequate.

If you could ever lower yourself, you might find that the 330k EVF in the
Kodaks is quite useable.

Why was this originally crossposted to rec.photo.digital.slr-systems? It is
not an SLR. I deleted that newsgroup from my followup.

I'll be interested when a truly pro model comes out with a full line of lenses.
As discussed in other threads a while back, it would be possible to make this
kind of camera work compatibly with an SLR system. It will need either a leaf
shutter in the lens (preferred) or a focal plane shutter. A hybrid system with
leaf shutters in most or all lenses could have camera bodies with optical view
(e.g. SLR, or classic rangefiner) or digital view (LCD, either on the back on
in the viewfinder, or even both). Focal plane shutters would be possible, but
with digital sensors, there is less need for that (film cameras needed a focal
plane shutter in SLRs).

While having the option for lightweight consumer grade cameras is good, for the
more intense photography, a serious camera, with at least enough size to hold
on to effectively, is desired. Having them use the same lens mount would be a
plus.

There is a viewfinder on it. You can see it in the picture. If it has no

viewfinder?

I want to find the JTAG port.

Article says APS-C sensor. That's larger than 4/3. That means better than 4/3.
That means not as good as full frame. OTOH, many cameras do reasonably well in
APS-C size.

If it includes an electronic zoom just for viewing, which lots of cameras
do already have in some form for viewing from the back LCD, then it can be
a reasonably convenient way to verify the focus was on the right part of
the scene, or for manual focusing (don't know if this camera can do that).
For more critical work, you would be on a tripod, using the back LCD, and
probably not this camera.

No LCD is going to have the resolution of the sensor without being a monster
in size (think of hauling around a big 42" widescreen TV with computer display
pixel size). If you want to see individual sensor pixels while composing, you
will need the zoom.

By the time Canon and Nikon release professional versions of this camera style,

that need viewfinder composing. I don't think it needs to actually have as

itself. There needs to be a convenient button for zooming the view for focus
confirmation/setting. A contrast enhancer on the view could also assist the
focusing effort.

| Can you advise me on the best approach to take, so I can continue to use
| this DC 210 camera. Like, I have thought about getting a memory card
| reader, and removing the memory card from the camera when I want to process
| the images, but maybe there is a better way.

1.

I don't know the DC 210 but some googling, which did NOT come up with a full
set of specs, does suggest the possibility it is connected to the computer
via a USB cable. You'll have to confirm that for me. This camera is so old
I cannot find it listed at my favorite spots for full specs.

Older Windows did not support USB directly. It was necessary to add software
to support the USB ports. This software would have at least included a driver.
It often includes other things to let you browse pictures, edit them, etc.
But this software will definitely NOT succeed at installing on XP if it is
trying to install a USB driver. That is because XP already has USB drivers
in it.

If this camera connects via USB *AND* uses the USB standard for presenting its
memory to the computer in the form of a small disk storage (just like a USB
key/stick does ... and just like every camera I have used does), then you do
not need ANY software on XP to at least get the pictures from the camera via
the USB cable. You would then need to use other software to work with those
pictures. But XP has more such software included than previous versions of
Windows. Vista has even more if you want to go that route.

So if it is true that this is a USB connection, just try it without adding any
software and see if a new drive pops up when the camera is connected.

2.

I personally find it preferrable to transfer pictures from camera to computer
by using the memory card. It involves fewer cables. It doesn't run down the
camera battery (or require yet another cable to power the camera). And it is
faster, even for my SDHC cards. FYI, CF has the ability to be faster than
other kinds of memory cards because of its 8-bit data path, but that does not
mean every device that works with CF achieves such speeds.

Investing in a small USB to memory card adapter is, IMHO, a good investment.
If you are comfortable working on the inside of a computer, AND if yours has
an internal USB connection, and the space to mount a front panel slot, then
an internal memory card adapter might be an option. Both of my main desktop
computers have them (but then, I build my own computers). All new computers
I see in Best Buy and Walmart have them already integrated. Many laptops
seem to have at least one memory card slot (usually just SD) these days.

Beware the adapters that have limited SD. If you get a new camera in the
future, it likely will have an SDHC or SDXC card port. Many of the USB
adapters still around are limited to the old SD (no HC or XC) protocol, and
as such cannot support cards greater in size than 4GB (and the effective
limit is really 2GB because most 4GB cards have been made to work with the
SDHC protocol due to a few software drivers limit SD to 2GB due to programmer
errors). If you choose to buy a USB to memory card adapter, don't pay more
than about $12 for it unless you see that it really has SDHC.

fuel the worst two-month start ever for the S&P," and I certainly was
not trying to say that other factors weren't involved.

Sincerely,

Kate Gibson

So, the author admits she:

a) reported numbers from S&P without any critique (S&P being one of the
ratings agencies that still thinks toxic mortgages are AAA);

b) used "wiggle words" in the lead para (she notes "helped fuel"; the
sentence also contains the phrase "the bulk of".

TOPIC: ViewNX - Adnormal Terminations?

I need help.

My copy of ViewNX (version 1.2.2) regularly and abruptly terminates without
reason when trying to simply browse through subfolders on my hard drives.

I have ALL of the latest Nikon updates, Microsoft XP Pro updates, Norton AV
2009 updates, Windows Defender updates, etc.

This has happened repeatedly over the past year or so, in spite of
reinstalling ViewNX (and all other Nikon software) a number of times.

ViewNX is the ONLY application on my computer that terminates abnormally
like this.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Bill
