Joslin, I've read the forums and find your response(s) to be quite arrogant and unhelpful. My post was addressed to folks who have first hand knowledge of the matter.

The question still remains: what specific hardware, especially video cards, did Adobe actually use to beta test CS4? It is relavent to me so I'd appreciate hearing from someone who knows.

How was it unhelpful...if you'd bother to read everything here you'd see
that people with same combinations of hardware are seeing different
results. Even if you had a full list of the myriad combinations of test
machines it wouldn't tell you if it would work for you.

I think it would be very helpful.

If folks had a list of very specific hardware and software they could rule out quite a lot of variables...absent a faulty drive or memory module, but that would be easy enough to test. I'm sure some could and would be willing to replicate the exact OS/apps/hardware/driver combo.

I've been relatively lucky so far but I don't usually do heavy processing. It is puzzling to me that people are often advised to update their video drivers...as PS was released months ago.

Which drivers, exactly, were the lab people using - two or three releases back that were working?

I've been using PS CS3 for a long while. All of a sudden it won't load. The logo comes on the screen and you can see it reading files. When it gets to "reading preferences" it stops and just hangs.

Hold shift + ctrl + alt as you launch (takes a lot of fingers). You'll get a dialog asking if you want to reset preferences. You do.

ZIP and secure? No way. RLE based compression schemes without additional scrambling can be cracked in minutes or even seconds just by brute force. If it must be a compressd file, RAR or 7z would be much better options. Apart from that the only true safety comes from full encryption and that can be done with tools such as PGP or TrueCrypt (both free/ with free versions) as well as a number of commercial products.

As Freeagent pointed out - for rasterized pixels you can only use the bounding box and even that is affected by the interpolation sub-sampling, so there is never any guarantee that resized items will match up 100%. Not really much you can do but eyeball it as best as you can.

I know I'm not going to be getting pixel-perfect results, but it seems crazy that one can't dynamically resize with respect to a specific, chosen origin point. The process of dragging a corner on the left, then dragging a corner on the right, then nudging a little, and then repeating seems like something out of MS Paint!

Exactly. If you need straight lines, draw a path, then stroke it with whatever brush you like. The only other alternative would be the line from the shape tool used consecutively. If neither tools provide what you need --> Adobe Illustrator is your friend.

Quite possible, but at least for the brushes that limit is very high, so I don't consider it a problem. I've seen people have a few hundred in one palette (how sensible that is, is doubtful to me, anyway). Perhaps this is more a limit of rendering the preview icons in your case.... As for the actions - I think you can only have up to 32 sets, each containing 32 actions, but likewise, that doesn't strike me as being limiting at all. but what do I know - I'm certainly not a power user...

Scenario:

I open an image/ Background layer. I duplicate that layer, and apply a Levels adjustment that I'm happy with.

Next, I decide to do an "effect" layer such as sharpening, etc., but I want to be able to control the effect of the "Sharpening" Layer with the Opacity Slider, without effecting the Levels Layer below.

If I Duplicate the Levels Layer, or select Layer New-"Layer Via Copy" for the Sharpening Layer, moving the Opacity Slider, on the Sharpening Layer, will also effect the degree of Levels adjustment on the Levels Layer, as it's a Duplicate of that layer.

"New Layer", or "New Layer From Background" doesn't seem to work either???

Leigh,

It sounds like you need to be using a Level Adjustment Layer rather than duplicating your background layer and applying Level to that. You can have your Levels Adjustment Layer sitting on top of all your other layers, affecting them all. You can then dupe your background layer and do whatever you want to it while the Levels Adj. Layer affects it independently.

If you're not familiar with Adjustment Layers, read about them in the help menu. I think they will solve your problem.

The problem is, i work for the police/government, and they

are very strict with programs... there is no printer software installed.

When i print something out, it gives me some options, but it has to be

a ready made sheet in some program. I cant add pics in it and then print.

Thats why, at work, i need to add the jpg to Word and then print it.

I have the XP's "Paint" in my pc too but i think its no use?

You should not have to put the graphic file into Word for the printer

to print it. Just open the printer program and select the file from

the memory stick. The printer program probably has the tools to orient

To see it correctly displayed in your graphics program, choose to view

'original' or 'actual' from the view menu. any other view distorts the

screen' is best for overall dimensions, but not colors. Check the

clors in 'actual' view.

The printer has confirmed that they can accept pdfs but these will be
converted to Jpeg prior to printing so the final outcome will be the same.

What on earth are they printing with?

Even an Inkjet can print directly from a PDF so that the Type is rasterized at the resolution of the output device on output (perhaps at 1400 dpi or greater).

Converting text to a 300 ppi JPEG before output is not only ridiculous but also shows total ineptitude by the print house operators.

I was just questioning why EPS was 'required' when PDF offers the same features of EPS and a few more.

TIFF and PSD will not include font data so the recipient will need the same font files installed.

Printers that exclusively use JPG files fall under the cafepress.com realm for specialty/novelty printing. They can get away with this on mugs and t-shirts. For a leaflet, you'd want a better quality printer. If you are limited to that printer, see if they can support 600 or 1200 ppi in the JPG file. 300 ppi is just too messy for general type. You might get away with a decent print at 300 ppi if the type is over 36 pt or so.

Something seems very odd with this particular printer. Does this printer have a web site address you can share that might explain their capabilities or requirements for artwork?

I'm always really pleased with the photographic print results but this is the first time I've used any text. The leaflets are also a new product they're offering and I wonder whether perhaps a new system for producing the leaflets is what is inhibiting them. Didn't realise text was such a minefield - how naive of me!!
The alternative solution they offer is to insert the text via their upload program, Loxley ROES, however they offer a limited choice of fonts and even less control over colour, size, positioning etc etc. Which is why I naturally went to Photoshop for the complete design.

Of course. But I thought that I had read somewhere that the type will be rasterized anyway in those TIFF and PSDs, when the type layers are left as type.

We're trying to avoid rasterized type so TIFF and PSD would be no better than JPG in this situation. PDF (or EPS) will embed the vector font data so even if your printer does not have 'bizzarofont.otf' on their system, they will still be able to print the document as if they did have the font file.

Greetings all-

I create a lot of text that gives the illusion of being extruded, with also has a soft shadow.

I do this by:

1. giving the text a color
2. duplicating the text
3. putting the duplicated text at a lower layer
4. changing the color darker
5. offsetting the duplicated text
6. creating a diamond the same color as the duplicated text, placing it in one of the voids created by the offset.
7. duplicating and placing as many times as necessary (keeping in a folder for organization)
8. applying a shadow to the top text layer

I have done this thousands of times over the years. There has got to be an easier and less tedious way!

Any suggestions???

I would STRONGLY recommend you go into your forum preferences (link near the top right of every page here) and change your username.

Do you happen to run Windows on your Mac or have access to a Windows based computer? If so, the easiest way to do extruded text is Xara 3D 6. It is fast and easy to use. Xara products were one of the major reasons I started using a Windows vritual machine (VMWare's Fusion) on my Mac.

We've run it on several of our machines (MacBooks, MacBook Alus, MacBook Pros and iMac 24") at work and none have had any problems. I've also run it on both my own machines and have no problems. If you have a stable system to begin with and no haxies or other "fun" things installed, and disconnect all external things when doing the installation, there should be nothing to worry about. Normal caution with other words. In my experience, when people get problems with security updates, it usually is something very particular in the users own system ti begin with that causes it.

very particular in the users own system ti begin with that causes it.

Model/processor/exact model of video card/RAM + Maximum RAM/Hard drive(s) + storage:space used:space free, etc.

CS2

CS3 needs a minimum of 10.4.8 (but 10.4.11 is recommended) or greater.

CS4 needs 10.4.11 or greater.

If the background is white you do not need to "peel it off" for placement in InDesign. Just save it as a .psd image and place that. InDesign can handle transparency and create transparent backgrounds all by itself from placed .psd images.
